Im sure there was one on ebay a few months, couldnt find it this time. But 140 would be more than adequate unless you are winching all day with headlights turned on and running 2 beer fridges in the desert.

EDIT its popped up again but not worth the jump in price over a 140 amp alt

LOL. Thanks for your input.

I think at this point I might find out exactly what this "'91 Tercel" alternator swap/mod consists of and if everything checks out I just might go that route.

Thanks again!

WOW!

Thanks, Mike!

I'm going to have to get it.

I'll check out what's up with my current alternator, but regardless of the outcome, I think it's about time that I've got a new unit.

Thanks again!

I still have the box that the Alt came in. I will go out to the garage and check who I got it from. Some place in the USA.

To swap pullys is just one 14mm bolt, but I may have had to enlarge the Land Cruiser Pully to fit the new Alt, but that was only a drill bit.
Mike

Not trying to contradict you or anything, but the part number (27060-10010) quoted in the Ebay listing refers to a 55A unit (see below). But this doesn't mean that the EB seller may have modified it to produce 140A. Don't know how, but maybe it has been done.

Mot-San,

The site above M2K Inc seems pretty good. I got to talk to them a bit as I may be picking up the 180 amp for the troopie. They seemed pretty knowledgeable.

To answer your question, they ain't cheap:grinpimp:

LOL, if you don't mind my asking, how much did they quote you for that unit?

I figure 180 should be more than enough for what I need. :hillbilly:

And I could not tell if any of these alternators could be picked up at any of those dots on their retailer map (and not sure where's the one closest to where I live).

I'll be sitting down when I read your reply, in case the price is astronomical (But their site does see legit and they seem like they know what they're talking about).

IIRC they were $4-500 dolla dolla bill. Crazy, no?

But for 120a at idle and 180 at driving speeds, it can run the disco ball and fondue pot I'm planning on putting in my troopie:grinpimp:

My stock alt was 80 amps .. I replace it with 150 amps from Tundra .. bit mods .. it's all documented in my Marilu thread ( my sign ) was the 2010 upgrades thread ..

Yeah the M2K alternators arent cheap. These are the last quoted prices I have seen

SBC-T4.2-250XP Idle 180 Max 250 - $775.00
SBC-T4.2-270XP Idle 200 Max 270 - $825.00
SBC-T4.2-350XP Idle 210 Max 350 - $1,295.00
SBC-T4.2-390XP Idle 220 Max 390 - $1,395.00

I got my Alt from this same company (Ace Alternator).
I know it fit and works, I run a ARB fridge (and center console), CB, Camera chargers, I Pod stuff, and a winch sometimes. (ok only when I have to pull someone else out).
I don't know what the Alt actually outputs (no bench test) but seems to work, and I am not sure if its possible for a Tercel Alt to produce 140 amps! But I don't really care if its Black magic or not, for 135$ shipped it good for me.

My original stock 92 & 94 work great even winching. Why not just rebuild yours.
I am skeptical about the Ebay deals .... most likely made cheap somewhere in Asia.
I seriously doubt they will last you 20 years.

They are getting good mileage out of them.
A few years an auto electrician friend of mine dismantled a rusted up 1HZ starter that had been left in salty water for few months.
He replaced some beyond repair components ,oiled it up and it was still going strong after 6 years.
The starter come from a factory in Malaysia or Taiwan,I forget which.
However ,he told me he had looked at a number of alternators and starters from SE asia and they were top quality.
Many of them are competing to supply parts for the australian mining industry and its the toughest testing ground there is.
Its just no market for cheap and nasty.
I dont know of any landcruiser owner's in oz who go down to the dealer to buy his alternators at 4-5 times the price of the aftermarket variety

Even if they dont last 20 years, how many on this forum have had a OEM alternator last that long?
Ive had 2 that failed at sub 250000klms and 15 years

I think Roberto fitted something like this to his BJ42 ,but i cant see a B engine listing

Just bought the Tercel High out put alternator off of eBay. Fingers are crossed.
Figuring it'll help with my Webasto, GSMauto cellular remote switch, third battery, and my planned electric veggie oil fuel heater, winch and roof rack lights.

Mike,
Did you do anything to adjust your charging harness? And do you have the 24v starter with the accompanying series/parallel solenoid, and if so, how has it held up under the higher current or did you somehow bypass it?
I'm getting ready to install my alternator and some aux batteries.

It is 6 years later. Has anyone had good luck with the alternator on an HDJ81 with 1991 Tercel high output version?

I just burned out my alternator on my 1991 HDJ81 and I'm looking for an easy replacement that puts out more Amps than the stock 60A. I contacted Ace Alternator in the USA, and they they have a 90A version for a Tercel but I was confused when he asked which 1991 Tercel.

I am curious if one has any more information to add to this thread. meafordmike, danakittilsen?

I think Terrain Tamer may offer one, I recall @wardharris or @orangefj45 mentioning they were testing it out.

Ward, will these work for the 1HDFT as well?
