Howdy all, first post here by me from the Amazon jungle of Iquitos Peru. Not too long ago, I stumbled upon a very well preserved (but neglected) 67 FJ40 which I picked up for 1200$ and proceeded to patch the old girl up pretty good and have been enjoying it´s surprisingly good manners in most all conditions on and offroad. Vastly superior to that 68 Scout I had, or the 68 Jeepster too for that matter. But, I´m here in the 70 series forum cuz the other day I responded to an add in the local paper out of curiosity for a 94 70 series wagon, long story short I traded him my 93 extended cab toy in the states for his 94 African bruiser here in Iquitos. Wow, holy %%%%! What a truck! I have been a toy 4x4 fan for years but this is something else... wow. Anyway, it´s a gas unit with 5 speed and set up for propane so it´s a little more economical but runs so so so smooth and the oil is clean as can be. Anyway... so my first issue is a burnt out electro control motor that actuates the switching from 2 to 4 wheel drive (no hubs)... I need a used one hopefully but just out of curiosity anyone know what these modules cost new? Also... any tips for the newbie on this gentle beast? God this thing would eat my 93 V6 4x4 pickup for lunch and not even burp... god HOW TOTALLY SUPERIOR THIS THINGS ARE TO those american market units...sheeese how embarasing.

Cool... thanks

Welcome to our forum. I think you will find a few more 70 series diehards on here.
I dont know much about the electric hubs, mine both have "get out and lock them yourself "type.
You can convert them to manual hubs if you want ongoing reliability.

Exactly what model and engine do you have? Its on the alumium plate on the firewall.

morning from Calgary Canada.
is it he hubs that are the problem or the front engagement in the t/case?

to test:
leave in 2 WD and lock the hubs. turn driveshaft by hand...it should not turn. if so one or both hubs are buggered.
leave hubs unlocked. engage front drive in the t/case. turn driveshaft by hand. it shoudl not turn...if it does then the vacumm shifter is non-functional. could be the VSV on the firewall...typical problem. if yours is a manual shift t/case then it could be the shifting linkage.

if it is the hubs check the magnets to see if they are damaged. the servo motor is pretty tough...might be a good time to go manual locking hubs if these are damaged.

I suspect he meant to say "brushes" rather than magnets.

To clarify, there are slip rings and contacts supplying power to the little motors that engage and disengage the hubs.. And there are small holes in the hub (to insert wires in) to keep the contacts withdrawn as the hub is reassembled.... If somebody puts it back together without using the correct procedure, the brushes will be bent and will not make contact with the slip rings. And thus the hubs won't work.

Hope that helps.

Tfer case or hubs?

Hi, the problem is the unit on the tfer case, not the hubs or so I was told. Honestly the car is not physically in my possesion yet so I have yet to thouroughly analyse the problem, but I think its the motor on the tfer case. More info when I have a chance. I take it there are electrical-mechanical motors on both the case and the hubs then (dumb question I guess) ? Anyone know of an online pdf manual I can download or a factory part number list?

Thanks,
Mark...

Hey all, thanks for the the feedback, it´s the transfer control motor 625$ from Japan. Also, sorry yes it has manual hubs, but the 4x4 system on this thing is different that anything I have seen, with a manual shifter for the transfer case, but a switch on the dash for 4 HI, can anyone give me a run down on how this system works, or some sort of basic info on this thing as I´m short a users manual. At least I would like to know that the shifter does... just two to four, with the electrical switch actuating the change from high to low range?

thanks

The H4 switch on the dash engages the front driveshaft.
The lever is for high ratio,neutral(t/case) and low 4x4. When you select low it should automatically select 4wd.

If you want to drive around in 2wd low,you leave the hubs unlocked

Thanks Roscoe. Now... anyone know of a source for used parts for 70 series landcruisers? I definitely need the control module that sits on top of the transfer case.

Try Crushers or anyone with a red star next to their user name. I think Crushers was wrecking something with parts that will suit yours
TLCruiserman,Ishobie,Radd cruisers and GScruiser parts are all on this forum and sell various parts.
Check out the venders forum in the index
MY apologies for anyone left out or spelt wrong:D
