Just bought my first LC, a 1985 FJ60. Problem is, the I have a hard time shifting into first or second gear (really have to force it sometimes, with some grinding) and it absolutely wont go into reverse, I can hear the gears grinding. There are times when I can shift into 1st or 2nd, but there I times when I cant. I dont even know where to begin on why it wont shift into reverse.

My next steps are to check the transmission fluid level, but any other suggestions??

bad clutch?

You might pull the inspection cover to see if you have any clutch left and if you do make sure it is disengaging

But if your clutch is OK there is a good chance the synchro rings are shot

The trans input shaft is not completely disengaging from the crankshaft when clutch pedal is depressed.

Possible causes in order of likelyhood:
bad pilot bearing
Leaking/tired clutch hydraulic components
misadjusted clutch hydraulics
low hydraulic fluid level

As other said, I would check the clutch, First thing I would do is bleed it to make sure its fully disengaging. Also I would replace the tranny fluid at some point, It made a world of a different on my bj tranny that I dont think had been changed in 10+ years.
