Need advice with my rig. PO installed SOA & 35" tires, but didn't change gears so my 62 takes off like someones grandma with flats on her wheelchair. I'm torn between taking her back down and putting smaller rubber on or re-gearing. It's a 'new' old rig to me, so I have plenty of other places I need to put cash. Which way is going to be easier on my wallet? I see plenty of threads about doing an SOA but I must be the only one who is thinking about going the other way. Anybody that can help?

One option is finding some 33's that could limp you by until you have the cash to swap gears. New tires would be a waste since your rig has the lift for 35's. SOA with 33's doesn't look that silly. Just keep your eyes peeled for deals in the classifieds!

if my rig was SOA, I would never go back!!!

OK, regear! Looking around, I found a calculator that tells me I need 5:29 ratio with 35's and found a website that tells me that is the cheaper option but also said in 62 with auto tranny and low 1st gear you could consider going down 1 gear (4:88). Opinions?

Automatic with Lift?

I'm looking at an 89 with flat springs. I'm think HFS springs which would give maybe 2.5 inches and another inch with shackles. They say this setup can run 33's. What about gears? Not sure if an Automatic can handle the stock gears running 33's? Any input?

Go get lern ed.

Search and FAQ. Don't hijack. That ryhmes.

Child, 4:88. Lurk and read.

Dont worry about it.
My thoughts are cruiser heads are never happy until they are spring over and much bigger tires. If you want 33 inch tires you will be fine. Yes it will slow you down some but ha.....62 are slow as hell anyway.
I would get your lift from cruiseroutfitters(ARB heavys...I know its $ but nothing for a cruiser is cheap) and he also sells gear kits or you can spend the $$$ and get the whole thirds already built and save some time. Dont waste your time on 4:56 gear ratio cause if you go over 33 inch tires you will want to regear again.... go with 4:88 and you will be quite happy more so on the trail.

One thing to consider is when you get that high the strengh in the axles is not as strong because there is more splines cut into the axle...just one thing to consider. How much are you going to have this rig in the rocks?

Damn, I can't imagine trying to run stock gears with 35s, with 33s and modified transmission (lock up in 3rd) it's bad enough. For the time being you could try to find some smaller tires for cheap (check the classifieds here) and run what will look like a roller skate.

For the long term, you'll have to decide between a regear and keeping it tall (assuming the lift was done safely) or dropping it down and making it a more modest truck. If you decide to go for the latter, you might find someone local to you looking to go tall, and could arrange a swap-a-roo between trucks (again assuming the lift was done right). What do you want out of the truck? Is it a road rig or a trail rig? Do you rely on it for transportation or is it a toy?

Another thing occurs to me, that gearing must be hell for creating heat in the tranny. If it doesn't already have one, you should really add an aux. ATF cooler infront of the rad. (see the FAQ section for details).

Good advice more so on the heat comment. I really did not mind the 4:11 that much with 33's. With the auto gearing for 4 wheel I really could not tell the diffrence at all in low range...it was just bad on hills on the open road. But like you said 35's would be hell.

My 60 has a 4 spd, not the auto & i have the 3.73s with 35" tires...no problem. I wheel it & it's my DD. Take off is good , only long steep hills are the only (mild) problem....Is it that different with the auto?

Go with the diff gear change. It will probably cost around the same as a new set of tyres and it will transform your truck. I just fitted 4.56's to my HJ61 auto on 35's and the auto runs so much cooler now, not to mention the massive improvement in fuel economy and performance. If you plan on heaps of off road use then go with the 4.88's.

33's for DD and big meats for Off road

Sorry, I'm a mean drunk, you're good.

pjfairchild, 33's are for OME, get some gears.

or drive to Oregon and I'll put the street meats back on my 62 and we'll trade rigs. Can you pulleaze post some pics of this beast of yours?

55MPH in overdrive:

4:10's 28" tires =1894rpm

4:88's 35" tires (34" in reality) =1857rpm

5:29's 35" tires (34" in reality) =2013rpm

Go 5:29's and dont look back. Your not going to break the pinion with a 3FE/auto. The extra few RPM's will help with the extra wind resistance and rolling resistance of the new meats.
