Help, too much oil?! (1 Viewer)

Hey guys! Here my very first post on the forum!

I have a 1985 bj60 with the 3b with an aftermarket turbo. I bought the truck from a friend of a friend who did everything on it!

But I'm having this weird problem. About two months ago I had my oil change at the local oil change place, I remember looking at the level right when they where done to make sure and it was good. A month ago I checked my oil level and it was way too high!

I looked online how the oil could have got higher, so I changed it myself and the oil that came out was normal, no coolant or water in it, and my coolant level is normal as well... So I thought maybe the oil change place did a mistake or something...

But now, I'm checking my oil level... Same thing! My oil level is way higher than the 7½ quarts that I've put in...

I have no idea what it could be!!!

Also, when I emptied the first time I had 3 and a half liter over what I was supposed to have... And from what I'm looking on the dip stick it looks like I have close to the same amount over...???

could it be diesel mixing with the oil? These would be miscible (would mix together and would not separate or form an emulsion as water and oil does). I don't have an explanation how the diesel is getting into the engine...at least not that much in a month.

There were recently some threads on this forum with a similar problem but on gasoline engines. But they were experiencing the "overfill" immediately after changing the oil...I'm assuming when you last changed your oil the level was OK right after, but increased with time/usage.

Check your injection pump. Fuel could indeed be mixing with the oil. You should be able to smell the diesel in the oil though.

If you got diesel mixing with oil…… your in trouble.

This happened on my Dads Duramax diesel, and it didn’t hurt it too Bad.

Check your injection pump. Fuel could indeed be mixing with the oil. You should be able to smell the diesel in the oil though.

What should I check?
And also, I dunno if it's me but it doesn't seem to smell like diesel...

Only 3 possibilities:

Diesel - Injection pump or injectors
Engine coolant - head gasket leak or crack - not likely as no milkshake
Someone is adding oil

You have changed oil 2 times, checked for correct level, then it is too full. My bet is IP.

What should I check on the pump or the injectors? Should I remove the pump and look for leak on a gasket? I'm totally new to those diesel truck...

I don't know your engine/IP, so other may correct me on my ideas. On the IP you probably have a lift pump where the hard fuel lines attach. These can leak internally. The IP also has internal seals that can fail and allow fuel to leak into the engine oil. If the injectors are leaking, I would expect smoke and poor performance. But, the injectors can leak down and allow raw fuel to flow past piston rings into oil system. I would think this would take a long time to raise oil level by 3 liters. I did not see how long it took for the oil level to raise, but the lift pump runs when ever the engine is running, so if leaking, could pass a lot of fuel into oil.

Do you have a manual? Search Mud for 3B IP pumps problems.

More than likely, any repairs will require a visit to a IP specialist.

Send off your 'too full' oil to Blackstone for analysis (next time you drain some off). They will tell you if it's contaminated with diesel. But, with the overfill amount you are suggesting, your oil should be water-thin (diesel-thin?) at this point.

This is likely a stupid question, but are you checking oil level when the engine is hot or cold? If you've been checking with the engine at running temperature, check it when its stone cold.

The only thing i can add to this is to check the part number on the dip stick. Could be the wrong one.

Yeah well that's where it's very confusing... The oil that came out seems to be pretty alright, didn't really seem to smell like diesel either... I'm am so confused about this...

I just came back from a oil change place to drain what was over, the dude was a Dick and don't wanted to take a sample for me.... But I still have the old oil, so I'll go with your Blackstone idea, I'll send them a sample of that!

Yeah I checked in both condition, and still have the same results. Just way too much oil

Now I’m confused what your issue is. After you change the oil does it start out at the right level but after a period of time does the level seem to increase (you mentioned 3qts over after one month)

Or, after you think you drain everything you put in 7.5 quarts. When you check the level is already too high?

I was wondering this too. I don't have the same engine as the op, but whenever I change my oil, I don't ever seem to drain the system completely. (I drain it just after it's cooled enough not to scald my hand when I remove the plug). If my oil level is good before I drain it, I measure what came out and put that amount back in +/-. Never had an overfill.

Is 7 1/2 quarts the dry fill amount for your engine? If so, when you are changing it, you are almost certainly not getting the full 7 1/2 quarts out of your engine. If your engine is overfilled, drain it. Add oil a quart at a time, checking your dip-stick between quarts, until you reach the "F."

Well... When I did the oil change myself, I dumped the oil in a graded bucket, and there was 11.5 quarts in it! So 3 quarts over what it supposed to be in... I filled it with ±7.5 quart, as I was looking at the dip stick and emptying the two 4 quarts bottles, I have now around half a quart left in it now...

Now I was looking at my dip stick yesterday and the oil level was way over the "F" wich is the full level...

I emptied what was over today, I will monitor the level on the next few days and I will bring a sample of my old oil to a testing place here in Calgary to see if there is diesel in my oil, as it doesn't seem to smell like it but would be the most probable cause of my issue...

I also talked to a landcruiser shop in Edmonton (I live in Calgary Canada btw) they talked me about a oil pressure relieve valve that could be one issue in my case... I will go see them on Friday

BTW sorry if my English doesn't makes a whole lot of sense sometimes, French is my first language

Your English is excellent! No worries at all.

So, whatever is in there is way too much.

Have you checked the "dry-fill" amount for your truck? Is it 7.5 quarts? If so, if you re-fill with the dry-fill amount, you'll have too much oil in your engine.

I have a 3FE. I don't have my Factory Service Manual in front of me, but if I recall, the dry-fill amount is either 7 or 8 quarts for the 3FE. I just changed my oil. Didn't get anywhere near the dry-fill amount out of it.

I could be way off here. If I am, please accept my apologies. Just trying to start with the simplest thing first before you start adding shop expenses.
