Help! Stuck with a breakdown in southern Utah, 500 miles from home

Sorry about the unplanned pit stop. While you're stuck in St. George you should check out the wildlife museum and- if you have a rental car- Snow Canyon state park. It will help kill some time.

Concretejungle: I appreciate that, but I'm now committed to Toyota there, and they're the only reason why my roadside assistance agreed to tow the LC so far from Bryce, so I'm a bit tied here... As my 80 was out from a $3k service in LA when we hit the road, I thought I was fairly safe for the 4000 miles to come. Busted.

Service? $3k? Did you at least get a kiss?

Seriously, what did they do for the $3k?

All fluids, brakes, gasket and so on. I have the breakdown somewhere but everytime I look at it I cry.

Grolar,
Go sit in the service area, as close to the managers desk as possible, with your 6 month old son until the job is done. Keep asking where you can throw the dirty diapers away. I promise they will move you up in the queue. The screaming wheel gets the service. They will come to understand your plight.

Good luck!

Lucy: that's exactly what I did and it worked:D. Anyway, the outcome is somewhat puzzling: the mechanic diagnosed... a blown EFI fuse:o. But he couldn't tell me what caused it. According to him, lotsa stuff is commanded by this fuse and it could be "400 different things", including the backup lights. He also says that he saw 80s blowing an EFI fuse once and that it never again happened. A micro short circuit, water somewhere, radio interference, whatever. He gave me an extra fuse and relay, and wished me good luck. I'm now a bit wary about driving the rig to Moab tomorrow. Last time the engine died while we were parking, but next time, it might as well call it quits in the midst of the White Rim trail in Canyonlands (no steering, no brakes, a kid in the back seat, d'oh!) Will keep you posted anyway. Thanks for the input once again. You rock.

Good to hear that you're back on the road. Good luck on the rest of your trip- think happy thoughts!

Lotsa stuff is eh?!?, Is that a dirrect quote:rolleyes:
I had a EFI blow due to an o2 grounding to the driveline :o
Glad to hear all is on the up and up.

Congrats! And if it blows on the white rim trail, find a way to call me. I'll come down and get you personally!

can't you get a few spare fuses or is this a weird one?

glad you got it running...

(eh, Kasp already got the right answer on the second reply post - not bad! :) what a site! and good folks... )

can't you get a few spare fuses or is this a weird one?

Standard AGC 15 amp fuse available everywhere from convenience stores to AutoZone to dealerships. Nobody should be taking long trips or going off-road without a box of spare fuses in a variety of amp ratings.

Your mechanic is somewhat correct in that there are several things that can trip that fuse. I don't quite agree that it was a fluke (pardon the pun)

Your '94 has a known issue with the O2 sensor wiring harness down by the control arm, close to the front drive shaft. I believe this was mentioned to you earlier in this thread. You should print out this thread before you get on the White Rim trail and I believe there was another "EFI fuse" thread recently.... though I may be thinking of this one....

Grolar,

Glad to hear that you're back in business.

Hope you'll be trouble-free for the remainer of your trip.

Check for your O2 wire hanging down by a steering component. Might have slipped out of the holder.

New update

 IdahoDoug and all the others: you deserve my respect. After Toyota in Saint George, UT, barely replaced the fuse (it took them two and a half days), I hit the road eastbound to Page, AZ, and in Kanab the engine died again at a traffic light:censor:. As my wife was about to set the 80 afire and climb into the first Greyhound to LA, a very nice local cop showed us a mechanic who looked puzzled too. I suggested he looked at the chassis for a loose wire. Guess what he found? An O2 sensor wire cut near the driveline! I'm seriously thinking about setting up a permanent internet connection in my LC so I'll know I'll always have a safety net. But in the meantime, I'll also try and improve my  rate from 1/4 to 1/2. Sorry the Cruiser was already in Toyota's hands when I could get near a wireless network, but you greatly helped me nonetheless.
Cheers Grolar

IdahoDoug and all the others: you deserve my respect.

With all due respect to Doug, Kasprzak told you to look at the O2 sensor wiring in post #3 several days ago.

Also a very easy PM to slide under your truck and have a look. The plastic wire retainer on mine was hanging by a thread. A few quick zip ties can save a lot of trouble.

B: right. BTW, I now have a Code 25:crybaby:. WTF? Could the mechanic have messed the harness? The rig rides just fine, but wondering if it will last for the next 1k miles, just what I need to complete my trip and go back home (and cuddle my under-warranty-35 mpg-DD:rolleyes:). Does a Code 25 look hairy and what would be the symptoms if I was heading to another breakdown?
Thanks
Grolar

Grolar,

You have an O2 sensor problem. You had a 28, then a shorted wire, now a 25. All O2 sensor related. The mechanic probably fixed the shorted wire but you had a problem before that so I don't think he is at fault.

You're not headed to another breakdown with an O2 sensor MIL code unless you still have a wiring problem (doubtful but possible.) Keep driving and have the O2 sensors replaced when you get back to civilization.
