This might be a stupid @$$ question, but i need to know what the little box that is attached to the upper left side of the firewall is called. Here's a pic

Voltage regulator

Thanks guys. I noticed on mine that it looks as though my speedo cable is attached to it, instead of going directly to the tranny/transfer case. Any thoughts?

If it is in line with a speedo cable I'm pretty sure it is a speed sensor for early emissions. Wasn't the voltage regulator on the driver's side below the brake and clutch master cylinders?

Mine is actually a 76, but I noticed that their are two cables attached to my voltage regulator (one coming from the cluster and the other going down towards the tranny. Hmmm.....

So the truck in your picture is not the truck in question?

'76 voltage regulator is not where it is on a '78 (pictured).

Correct. I used that pic as an example. I guess I'll take a pic on mine this afternoon and post so that we have a better idea of what i'm talking about. hahahaha.

Don't have pictures of my 76 at work but I believe the box is silver colored not black. Speedo comes in from the driver's side then out the bottom and runs to the back of the transfer.

From my VERY recent experience, the voltage regulator can be wherever the PO put it. I've got a '78 that, come to find out, has TWO voltage regulators on it; one on the firewall under the master cylinder and the other was on the passenger-side fender well. How many wires are going into it?

The one in the picture you posted is a voltage regulator, sounds like the one on your truck is a speed sensor mounted in the same location.

Here is my pic of the box I was talking about. Is this the speed sensor? Notice the speedo cables. My speedometer is not working at all. I just purchased a speedo cable through CCOT. I'm wondering if I need to replace the sensor as well. If so, where do I get one?

If that is your cruiser it looks like it's already desmoged and running a speedo directly from the speedo to the transfer case all you have to do. Curious what cable you get. During the speed sensor years it took two cables to make the whole run.

That is the speed sensor for the emissions on a '76, the voltage regulator should be on the DS side below the brake booster. If your truck is de-smogged, you can use an aftermarket speedo cable and by-pass that box. If not, your only option is used to replace that sensor -
