Help! Need a source for FZJ80 Birfs - Follow up.

Little Brother trashed a birf on his pretty white 80. IIRC I paid less than $200 for the spare birfs for my FJ40. (Still haven't needed them.)
I called Toyota and even with my discount...HOLY COW!

Anyone have a reasonable source for a replacement 80 Birfield.

It seems that there are two classes of 80 series birfs, OEM and everybody else. The quality is as disparate as the prices paid for both examples. It appears that you can get a good OEM one for all the money or a crappy one for cheap.

The OEM is quite reasonable and probably the most cost effective part available. Then again if you are a sadistic bastard who likes tearing into his axle on a regular basis. Search on birfield and Landtoy80 and put in what he did.

HAY!!!!!!
Newfields are good for... 30,000 mi
This way when you repack the wheel bearings you replace the birf too. No need to clean the birf as you just install a new one.

As I have the Newer New Newfield, we will see how it holds up.

I got two OEM birfs and the inner from Spectre for $450, it was all in really good shape as well, Brad.

We have one aftermarket supplier who sources genuine toyota OE for stock, which have been used by many for some time now, which are alot cheaper than toyota genuine units, but same same....

How do we get these to the US and how much $$$ for them?

I just got some wheelbearings so I can dive in the knuckle and install the seal I forgot to put in when I swapped out the NewFields :(
I am getting good at wheel bearings and knuckle dissasembly.... Its the assembly that I have a problem with.

Panzer, PM me if you'd like. We had a raffle on Sat night at our event and one of the prizes was a new 80 series birfield. The guy that won it does not have an 80. If you PM me, please include year of truck and whether or not it has ABS.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry so long to reply I was out of town playing mechanic.
Yup, I sucked it up and went with OEM. I looked at one supplier that had aftermarket Birfs that required pressing the old ABS ring off of your old birf and onto the new one. Passed up on that. Other one was MAF and it appeared to also require reuse of the old ABS ring.

Junk-thanks for the thought.

For anyone that was wondering how much "Holy Cow!" is....retail around $650 EACH.

CAS,

Was $650 the "smart shopper" price?

-B-

IIRC, Dan has mentioned a significantly lower price for the "smart shopper". Was very comparable to the cost of Newfields.

Cas, with most you'll have to re-use the old ABS ring. If you are not going to, please let me know because I need an ABS ring and it's not something you can buy as a seperate part.

The smart shopper price was around $465. Membership has its priveledges.
The Birf ended up not being the problem so I have a perfectly good (non-returnable) Birf for a trail spare.
Junk. Try IIRC cruiser-parts.net (the TLC recycler in NH.)and see if he has a gently used abs ring. Probaly have to buy the whole birf but what the heck its worth trying to get just the ring.
Another option would be the dredded...TAP in Cali.
