My new-to-me 13BT powered BJ74 is currently sporting a straight through exhaust with no muffler. If it was a big block Chrysler V8 that would be devine to my ears but the 13BT note is a bit coarse.

Help me decide what to add. I'm thinking a Flowmaster 40 or 50?

:hmm:

On my HJ60 and now on my LJ70 I ran 2.5" Pipe all the way back with a 18" resonator...happy both times

Hey Dan,

My understanding is that whatever muffler you buy, it must be a straight in and out muffler, meaning that the inlet and outlet have to be aligned and you should be able to see the outlet through the inlet without much restriction. A muffler that it is typically used for a gasoline engine (sometimes off-set) will create too much restriction to the exhaust flow and will severely increase your exhaust gas temperature (EGT).

Here is a link to the muffler that I will install on my BJ70 once I put on the turbo (3B-T) and I have seen multiple threads (on IH8MUD) with people using them and they seem to be fairly happy with it:

http://www.aeroexhaust.com/mufflers.html

I bought the AT2525XL and it is 2.5" in, 2.5" out in the extra large version. They also sell the AT2525 regular size if space is a concern. Some people seem to use a 3" exhaust for a 13BT as shown in post #78, #79, and #80 of the thread below:

https://forum.ih8mud.com/70-series-tech/286801-canadian-build-jdm-bj74-4.html

If you decide to go 3" and with the AeroTurbine then the muffler would be an AT3030XL or AT3030 depeding on the version that you want.

The cheapest place I found these mufflers was (if link doesn't work, google "Mandrel Bending Solutions"):

I bought two of the AT2525XL version (one for the BJ70 and one for the BJ40), a 2.5" Flex Piple, some clamps and odd parts and shipping was about $20.

Hope this helps!

P.S. Some more links about IH8MUD members using the AeroTurbine:

I have an Aeroturbine 2525xl on mine and really like it. Not very loud at all, just a nice aggressive grumble is all.

Don't mind my 3030xl as of this point at times I wish it sounded more sporty. The smaller one (no xl at the end) doesn't have any ceramic packing in the front of the muffler. I would imagine it would be sportier and at times I wish it was louder but it's not needed.

Great suggestions. Thanks to all of you.

I also added a aero to my 3" - MUCH more suitable for my purposed - sounds grest - not too loud

Agreed on the demand for photos!

Here is one poached from another thread......I haven't taken any of my own yet....

I fitted up a 100 series resonator on mine today, and it works like a champ. Before welding it up, I glanced inside and it's just a perf metal inner and straight through. It really took all of the annoying sound out of the exhaust just like a muffler would. Best part, 100 guys pull them off so you can pick one up for free. Other than a slight restriction b/c it was smaller than my 2.5" exhaust, I have very few complaints about it so far.

I plan on trying an 80 series too, just b/c it's so much shorter than the 100. 100 resonator is very close to a muffler in size.

Another happy Aero Turbine user here.

Holy thread revival.

I ended up using one of the two Solo Performance 3 inch ID stainless resonators that I removed from my SRT8 Challenger. So it ended up being "free" the second time around. :hillbilly: Of course the first time around it was stupid money that was not very well spent....
