So from my reading of posts here on Mud, it seems I’ve got a fuel pump issue and maybe others (CAT, sensors?). I’m stalling out- twice while climbing high elevations, twice at stable elevations. Finally was able to get a PO174 “system too lean bank 2”, other than that, just the CEL.

Anything I can do on the road to fix this temporarily? For all 4 events, if I wait 15-20 minutes, car starts right up, and runs well, but I’ve now stalled twice in the past hour. 2006 LX with 135k miles.

I think you might have vapor lock which leads to pump failure. Does anything happen when you open the gas tank lid as it stalls?

I don't have a 100 and have never dealt with this error code myself, but a quick google turned up that this code is thrown when running too lean.

Assuming your engine still runs acceptably fine, you can drive with the P0174 code on and finish your trip. But when doing so, don’t accelerate hard, and avoid putting any heavy load on the engine. Essentially, this code means it is either getting too much fuel or not enough air. This offsets the air-fuel mixture to a degree where the ECU, which uses the sensor to measure the oxygen content, is no longer able to compensate for the issue. As a result, the car will be sluggish on acceleration and will run rough.

And a few vids which claim to contain fixes (I haven't watched them myself):

I opened the cap after it stalled, and didn’t notice much differential pressure.
A failed MAF sensor/ Oxygen sensor would throw errors but not stall it, I don't think.

It's probably your filter or your pump. The filter is very easy to change, but my money is on the pump, if its the pump it will completely give out in the next few hundred miles.

Stalling

Update to my answer- so today, total 4 stalls today- last one while climbing from 5000 ft elev to almost 9000 ft, and stalled at exactly the same spot- removed gas cap, and off- gassing started immediately, and lasted a good 5 minutes at least! Finally got started again. I also failed to mention that just prior to today’s stall-outs, I had idled the engine for about an hour. I know- not good for any engine, but due to circumstances I won’t go into, I didn’t have a choice. I read somewhere on Mud that prolonged idle is bad for (…CAT?). I’m sure I still have the original CAT, but I am somehow missing my tailpipe!(???).

Anyway, thank you guys for your input- finally got back to my 9000 ft campsite. Got some work to do or towing coming up.

You are running into a very common issue that is well documented here on the forum, it's happened to me before. It happens at high altitudes and prolonged climbs. When the charcoal canister is overwhelmed and saturated this is what happens. There are many solutions for me it was buying a new canister but releasing the vapor periodically will take care of it or keeping the fuel tank as full as possible. These two have seemed to work for a lot of people. I'd worry about the cats later.

Edit to add biggest thread:

Stalling resolved
savirc- your diagnosis was spot on- thanks. Got a new fuel pump/filter and MAF installed a week ago, and haven't stalled once in several trips from 5000 ft elev. to 9000 ft elev. I've still got P0174 and P0171 codes, which I'll resolve soon, but in the meantime, I'm mobile! Thanks for your help.

My wife was driving around and the vehicle stopped twice on her. Just conked out. Just quit. Both times it stopped it started back up right away.
After the second stall, the CEL popped on indicating a P0174. I cleaned the rather new and clean MAF sensor and installed a new gas cap.

After having been parked for a few hours, I jumped in and started to back out of the driveway to back it into the garage, it stalled again in the middle the street. It would not start up again. It would crank but the engine would not start-up. I thought this issue has to be the fuel-pump. It was!

The shop installed a new fuel-pump and it's running well again.
