Transmission is circa 1975 or 1976. You will know if the t-case is a match by looking inside the top cover at the width of the gears. Swaps of 4wd controls and parking brake drums are common.

BTW, that's a serious dent you have in the cone shaped cover on the back side of the t-case. That is usually caused by the stake nut backing off the tailshaft of the transmission. It happens shortly before everything goes KABOOM!

You had better take that cover off as well and have a look.

Mark didn't the lower geared transfer case end in early 75? wouldn't those still have the thinner gears? I bought for dirt cheap what was suppose to be a 78 transmsiion and transfer case. Looking inside and dating the case the transfer turned out to be April 74 with thinner gears. On this one the direction of the high low shifter and vacuum 4WD makes me think it is probably a earlier case.

I have never seen a cover plate bubbled out like that. Guessing the only thing damaged would be the threads on the tailshaft. That is until the bearing decide it wanted to move backwards.

John, wider lo range started in 74, wider hi range in 4 of 75.

Ed, smooth fop housings went thru 76.

And as I said, I've seen many top covers swapped.

All that said, there is a somewhat increased likelihood that a whole case was swapped, the original stakenut reused and not properly set, and that is why the rear PTO cover looks like that.

Brings back memories. Rubithon 1992 I stopped by the lilly pond just after Little Sluice to repair a broken stock shackle. A guy pulls up next to me in a '76FJ55 and says if I'm gonna pull over for repairs, he's gonna pull over too.

I get done replacing my shackle and go over to see what he's doing. He's got a tube of silicone, and he's trying to seal a leak in his t-case. I ask him where the leak is and he describes the rear PTO cover. I look under the truck, and sure enough there's a disc that looks just like a electrical junction box knockout plug just dangling off the center of the cone.

I explain to him that he has to remove the cone, reset everything on the
tailshaft and re-stake the nut. He says "Well if I have to do that, I might just as well just change the cover." I reply "that's a great idea, but I don't think you're gonna find a spare PTO cover on the trail." He says "I think I have one."

Amazed, I follow him around to the back of the 55. He rolls down the window, reaches in, moves aside some camping gear and moving blankets and  HE'S GOT 16 MILK CRATES OF SPARE PARTS, INCLUDING A COMPLETE TRANSFER CASE!
