I'm in the middle of having my clutch replaced...bought a clutch kit off of e-bay from Ed at World Motor Products...great guy, much help...sent the first clutch, wrong one. We talked, he sent another, wrong one...then he did some research, said that the first clutch would have fit 95% of the BJ60's out there...mine just happens to be in the 5% that uses a 10 inch 21 spline clutch. He tracked one down in a Canadian company "Fenco"? I called, wouldn't sell it to a private party. He called numerous times, they wouldn't get back to him. He told me to try AutoZone here in MA, but since they didn't have it in their computer database (even though Fenco provides their clutches) they couldn't get it. Cruiserparts didn't have it, the one on Spectre Off Road that I looked at didn't have 21 splines...anyone know where I can get one? Any leads would be much appreciated!

Thanks

What year BJ60...not that it matters much. The clutch disc from 80-08 build date crosss right up to the 87-07 application in EPC. But I can give you the correct part number for your year, then see if C-Dan from this site can source it for you. If he can not, and it it not a USA available part then consider finding a local HD truck repair shop in your area. Take your pp and disc to them. Many times they are plugged into the rebuilders in your area, and they can re/re your stuff to like new. Or, you could call a Toy dealer in Canada and have one sent your way. Ens Lexus Industrial from Saskatoon in Canada is helpful and will ship stuff across the line. http://www.ensindustrial.ca/

Thanks for the quick response and helpful info. It's an 83 BJ60.

I've had them rebuilt locally. You may actually find it a little cheaper than buying one!

It's an 83 BJ60.

Disc = 31250-36113 (cross's up to 60090) (81-10/84-05 BJ60) (Check with C-Dan for availability)
PP = 31210-36072. (This one shows as a good USA number)

The disc is available in Canada, though what current numbers will be I don't know. Give the numbers above and a Toy dealer should be able to help. Check with C-Dan 1st though. You might also want to check with Marv at SOR.

I asked CDan in Arizona about diesel parts yesterday, and he said that he couldn't help as there were no diesels sold in the US and thus no database to draw from...

Yes, if you walk into a Toyota dealer in the USA and ask them for a part for a diesel driven Cruiser that was not sold in the USA then you will likely come up against a brick wall. However, if you have the part number you need, have a helpful parts guy, many times the part number will present itself as available, or show on the system. For example...if you ask for a pressure plate for a 1983 BJ60 at a USA dealer...they will look at you sideways. Give them 31210-36072 and see if they can get it. Try 31210-36100 (84 up BJ60) and I bet they can get it cause it is the change up number for an FJ60 (from 60080). Part numbers will get you far...

afaik the BJ42 sand BJ60s that I have seen all use the same clutch parts. They are easy to get and common.... I think that you may find Specter has the best prices.

Is $350-ish an average price nowadays? The clutch in my 1984 BJ60 still works fine, but would like to know how much it costs in case I ever need to replace it. Hope mine falls into the 95% category...

Also, on my BJ60, when the clutch is out (not pressed), and the transmission is in neutral, it makes a noise, kind of like a spinning/slight grinding. When the clutch is pushed in, that faint noise is gone. I've had other vehicles that did that for years and never had a problem with them. Is this normal with BJ60 clutches?

sounds like your pilot bearing is worn out good time to replace it when the clutch is out.

Try putting a lite return spring on the clutch fork

Cricket = throwout bearing. Could be that too, and would be my guess. Either way, you replace both when you do the clutch as standard course...

found a clutch

Hey everyone, thanks for the info...I talked to my mechanic about finding someone to re/re the clutch and pp, he said that he's had a few bad experiences and wouldn't recommend it. I called Spectre and the part number that they had was different from the one above. Finally I got a hold of Tom from Fenco (a different person than the first one I'd talked to) and he was willing to give me the part number for AutoZone to use with a "V.D.P." order. That worked! (the number is NU31160). They had it in stock in Memphis and it was here in MA the next day. It cost like $259.00 I think. So if you need the 10inch 21 spline clutch that's a way to go. If you do have the 95% clutch, Ed at World Car Products sold me one for about 109.00 (though he said it was actually supposed to be a bit more, they'd made a mistake listing it). So, we'll see if the third clutch is the charm! Thanks again.

i believe the flywheel on the 42 is slightly different than the one in the 60, relating to the 3B's. So that may have something to do with it.

I have some of these sitting side by side in my shop and I have not noticed any differences, then then I haven't reallly had a super close look. It doesn't make any sense that there would be a difference since they used all the same parts for most everything else.

When the clutch pedal is out, the pilot bearing is not spinning, but the front bearing (input bearing) is spinning. Sometimes they will make a whirring sound or a slight growling sound when they're getting tired.

The release bearing (aka throw out bearing) may make noise with the pedal out if it's just making contact with the fingers on the clutch cover (aka pressure plate).

Yes, that what mine sounds like. I'm not sure if or when the clutch was changed by the previous owner, but hopefully I've got a while before it, or any other parts, need to be replaced.

Is there any way to distinguish the sounds of a bad through-out bearing vs input shaft bearings?
My 85 BJ60 is doing the same thing. Quite badly.

The clutch itself is still great, but im about to replace it and the through-out bearing at the same time and hope that cures my issue. Its still the original at 355,000km

UpsideDown-so can I or anyone eliminate the pilot bearing as a possible culprit if it don't spin when the clutch is released, and making noise when released only?
