Ok, I just had a bad episode with my BJ74 auto, so hopefully someone will know something about what it could be.

I'm just driving along and suddenly all the lights come on (the turbo red light, the battery light, the auto box light, the filter light). So I drive a tiny while to a mates, stop, and coolant is exiting the resevoir tank pretty fast, and the temperature is very hot.

I couldn't turn it off (even with the turbo timer, and taking the key out) so i rang a mechanic mate and he told me to block the hole feeding the turbo to turn it off. After a while it did turn off, and now I'm not sure where to go from here.

Advice plz.

That happened to me once, exept the over heating part. That alternator wasn't charging if memory serves me correct. If you are also over heating then the first thing I would check is the belts. The water pump and alternator share the same belt.

You've got 2 problems there, one electrical and one an overheating problem.

Have you checked the fan/alternator belts for adjustment

Or by coincidence you have a bad regulator in the alternator or bad battery lead contacts causing the electrical problems, and a bad thermostat in the coolant system.
You could also try a new radiator cap as well.

Have a look at the edic arm on your fuel pump. Ive never done it ,but I thought you could move it by hand to the off position and shut the fuel off.
If not try putting it in 5th gear and let the clutch out abruptly

The other thing is that while i was driving at the time it happened, the brakes weren't functioning as they should.

edit - cheers joe and rosco. rosco, i drive an auto.

It kind of needs a bit more info. Were there any of these things ,spongy, pulsating pedal, brake fade, pulling to one side, rock hard with no stopping power, pedal flat to the floor???

Yeah sorry rosco, rock hard

Anyway just got it back from the towing, and one of the belts snapped, so hopefully thats it and no further damage has occured.

that sounds like it, there goes your water pump, and your alt (and as a result your vac system...)

Ah all good now. Turns out it was just the belt, and it caused all sorts of chaos.

Cheers for your help guys. It's good to know you can come to a site and get close to expert help on your car.

I hope everything is O.K. after the overheating incident
