Instead of just a hello, here's something interesting I just looked up.

This thread showed some melted bearing material in an oil pan:

Here's one of the links from a yahoo search for babbitt bearings:

And this wikipedia entry:

It's amazing that Isaac Babbitt in 1839 came up with an alloy that did this:
"The structure of the alloy is made up of small hard crystals dispersed in a matrix of softer alloy. As the bearing wears the harder crystal is exposed,
with the matrix eroding somewhat to provide a path for the lubricant
between the high spots that provide the actual bearing surface."

Sorry, I hadn't set up my signature yet, here it is

Hey Bob, good to see you here. How are things going up north? Things are still a bit dry down here. The club has the Christmass tree run in acouple of weeks and there is still no snow.

Things are good here. It turned off cold a few weeks ago, single digit mornings the last few weeks.

We had about a foot of snow 3 weeks ago and nothing since, I wish I could send some your way to help out with the snow run :)

In the old days, before there was an AutoZone or Pep Boys one had to pour one's own bearings when rebuilding an engine. Rod and main bearings. You'd have to melt the babbitt material, pour it into the cap then, using special tools scrape and shape the bearing surface.
Or so said my Pappy. I have some of those tools somewhere that I inherited from my grandpa.
