Can anyone confirm that the brass coolant pipe attached to the block is in the correct orientation, or is it backwards? It's from a 74 model year, and this style of pipe is a bit different than others. I saw a picture in the "coin toss" build thread and this pipe was opposite of mine with the elbow facing the front. The brackets on mine don't feel right that way.

I think you are 180 degrees out. The bends go forward, or to the right in the pics. There should be a piece of heater hose that goes to the heater, through the firewall off of the straight piece of that assembly.
 
Seems like I remember some spacers or bushings that are used to bring the piping away from the side plate.
