I lost a low beam on my BJ40, I decided to check the voltage before I changed out the Lamp since I had been working on the truck in that area a couple of days ago. Low and behold I had 12 vlts I then check the other light and it also was 12 vlts. Is thsi normal or did the PO change something ?

Hi,
I've read somewhere (I don't remember, but a North Americain guy) that the wiring for the light was cut in two parts on the 24V 4-series.
One part wiring to the first battery and the second part on the second battery.
So, the bulb are 12V. If one is dead, you must replace it quickly, or you will unbalance the batterys and kill them gradually (it is also for that reason that you should not connect 12V equipments on only one battery on a 24V truck)

I believe Canadian BJ70's have the same 24v into 12v for each headlight.

Why is it like that?
you din't have 24V buld ?

I think, even if they don't die, that 24V buld is better for battery life.
Is FZJ80 has the same system ?

Thanks for the info, At this point I am thankfull that Toyota did this since 24 vlt light might be a problem here in the states, As far as the details why and how I don't need to muddle the brain with the details until I need to know.

Thanks Myrle

Does anyone know if a 24 volt HID bulb exists... if so, where can I find one.

there are a lot of folks who suggest that HID isn't so great for offroad.
Personally, I'd prefer a couple of lights to just one set of HID. Redundant=good.

Some crazy Transport Canada requirement...don't ask me why. Reasoning behind it probably made as much sense as our much loved gun registry.

With the headlights off you should show 12V at two pins on one side, and 0V at all pins on the other. The 0V side is the 12V side of the system, and the side showing 12V with headlights off is the 24V side.

Check out this post for clarification: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=69908 and this for the diagram:https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=68379

I recall the factory diagram lacking, but do not recall what the exact problem was.

Beware that losing low beam can happen in the dimmer relay as well as the headlamp itself---this happened to me this winter with moisture, cold, etc. who knows. Initially the one lamp came on spontaneously with the truck just sitting, then I lost low beam. Fiddled with the relay to fix it, but not after getting my spare headlamp out of storage and replacing the offending one... Here's the relevant thread:

EDIT: Greg beat me to it.
