I just bought the slee harness and want to upgrade my lights:). I have read some of the threads on the john deere hif lights. I don't know anything about this. could some one give me some advice on what lights i need and where to get them.

thanks, so much

Read the lighting section in the FAQ. There is all the information there that you could possibly want including sources for buying the HIR bulbs and exactly which bulbs to get.

search HIR bulbs. Can buy them on ebay. Work awsome.
Cheers,
Sean

edit - beo beat me and added going to the FAQ. DOH!

I just upgraded my lights...

There's a guy on eBay that is referenced in a few threads. I emailed him with a clarification question and never received a reply.

I then went to THE SOURCE -- Daniel Stern (see the FAQ). He was prompt and very helpful. And his prices were $24 each -- much less than I had seen in the posts here.

He also has brighter brake, sidemarker, turn signal, and reverse bulbs.

When I installed the bulbs (minor trimming of tabs with a Roto-Zip was necessary), the bulb connectors in the battery tray were extremely corroded.

I have a new harness from Slee coming -- replace the connectors and hopefully even brigher lights (less voltage drop than OEM harness).

Did mine last night. Big difference and really nice that it's the same color of light.

Ebay guy/Max Lumens was prompt and the shipment was fast. Really easy to trim the tab with a fine-toothed hacksaw.

Worth it!

The IH8MUD discount still lives

I just ordered my bulbs from his ebay auction - paid full price and mentioned IH8MUD in the comments - I received back this reply with my Paypal receipt

Hello, Pasquale- Thanks for the bulb order; they'll go out tomorrow. I extend a courtesy discount to IH8MUD members, so I will refund some of your paypal funds.

Regards,
"Max"

he refunded me 12.00 instantly - Max rocks!

Yeah the guy from Ebay, "Max", responded back to me right away and shipped them right out. I haven't got them yet as I just ordered on Monday but its looking good so far!

I had good results with the Ebay high and low beams. He was very prompt in his shipping.

Do these have a good "cutoff" on the beam pattern above a certain height? One of the things I can't stand about the stock lights is the "warp speed" effect of driving at night in a snowstorm.

Just so I get this...these are replacement bulbs that slot into the stock headlamp housings?

Thanks,
Nay

That has more (everything) to do with the design of the reflector/lense/housing than the bulbs themselves, unless the bulb(glass part) has a (much) different shape than the original HB3/4.

BUT, I haven't done the mod myself, so what do I know? :D

from "Max" the bulb guy - Please request that if you recommend the bulbs to anyone else, please also tell them that the IH8MUD discount applies to purchases that are NOT made on ebay. By the way, lots of cars take these bulbs. The purchase doesn't have to be for a Land Cruiser. Just mention IH8MUD.

When you order, please specify how many bulbs of each type you require. Send me an email to maxlumens@finemotoring.com

An online search turned up some info that the GE-made bulbs had problems with filiment focus.

The bulbs I received last week were Toshiba and made in Japan. I'm very happy with the bulbs and focus.

Another website shows light intensity and beam pattern.
http://www.bmwcca.org/members/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Let_There_Be_E36_Light
(you'll need to advance to page 2 or three for cutoff patterns)

That may help you but there is probably only so much the bulb can do. The warp speed effect is no fun: don't try driving in a snowstorm in a Honda Odyssey.

This picture is what I am talking about. I bought Hella H4's for my old Heep, which replaced the entire assembly and not just the bulb. They had the pattern in the picture above - there was an excellent cutoff pattern, which made an incredible difference in nighttime snow driving in terms of limiting the "warp speed" effect. Additional brightness was not phenomenal, but that really isn't my issue.

Seems to me that a brighter bulb with the same pattern would actually worsen the problem, and it almost never rains here at night so I don't care too much about those conditions.

Anybody done full assembly replacement with the idea of achieving a pattern such as shown above? What did you use?

Thanks,
Nay
