I have a question about head gaskets. Specifically, are all NEW Toyota head gaskets MLS? I just ordered this one from Cruiserparts.net (3B 13B-T Cylinder Head Gasket 8/80 and later [11115-58110] - $90.72 : CruiserParts.net, Toyota Landcruiser Parts), and they claim it is genuine Toyota. It is composite, and it looks an awful lot like the aftermarket one I got from SOR a few months ago. Not only that, the copper parts on it are all corroded and nasty, there seems to be some plastic covering over the silver pieces around the cylinders that is peeling off, and it is just overall dirty. It isn't even in the original packaging.

To me, this isn't acceptable at all? Am I being too picky here? Unfortunately, I tried my local Toyota dealer, and they were no help at all a few months ago (hence the composite head gasket from SOR that doesn't seem to be holding ). I should have ordered from Beno or Cruiser Dan, but I was awaiting a call back from them and planned on leaving town soon. I wanted to get it ordered. When I saw that Cruiserparts had genuine Toyota listed, I figured why not.

So, what do you all think?

The packaging:

And the corrosion:

And the pictures don't do justice to how nasty this thing looks. So, is this a Toyota gasket? They claim it is part number 11115-58110. Is it?
:meh:

And, I just held it up to the original head gasket that I took off a couple of months ago, and it won't fit my 3B anyway. It is for a non-sleeved 3B. Everything lines up, but the holes for the cylinders are too small.

The original head gasket is on top, and the "new" one is on the bottom. So, it won't work anyway.:mad:

You would think a cruiser supplier that advertises a specific product would know what it fits. Apparently not.

I am obviously going to send this head gasket back. But, what do you guys think? Is it genuine Toyota?

04112-56040 is an old valve grind kit from Toyota. Looks like they might have taken the HG out of an NOS kit and sent it to you.

11115-58110 is the correct PN for the later 3B engines with the sleeves. There are 4 in the country currently new from Toyota warehouses.

04112-58040 is an old gasket kit number that supersedes to 04112-58042 but the US EPC does not show this supersession so a regular Toyota parts department isn't going to know this.

EDIT: There was a supersession of HG part numbers as well and I think you are seeing the result of this with the incompatibility. The earlier valve grind kit (-58040) would have had the HG for the non-lined 3B block.

Thanks Beno! I just left a message for you on your voice mail. So, it appears that it is at least a geniune Toyota product. That makes me feel somewhat better. It still has to go back since it won't work. This time I'm ordering from you!

And one other quick question. Are the new ones MLS?

Thanks!

I don't know if the new ones are MLS. I am going to say probably not. It is probably composite.

Just to clarify for those hoarding part numbers

3B HG for a sleeved block: 11115-58110

3B Valve grind (i.e., HG job) kit: 04112-58042

I don't remember offhand what I recently bought from you (just the HG, or the valve grind kit) but either way....
