nah, i have one of those and although very practical the troopie is just WAY more cooler and practical at the same time.
room for 5 cord of wood or 11 kids ... try that in your 81.

Or you can put those same 11 kids back in the pickup bed and not have to listen to them. Throw a tarp over them so law enforcement can't see them and you are good to go.:)

Typical southern thinking....:hillbilly:

You guys have to take wayne aith a grain of salt, he just likes to hate on us 80 guys, especially 5-speeds. I too was in this situation FOR 4 YEARS. I really wanted a 70 series, flat bed at first, then a troopy, but in all reality the 80 was a better choice for the reasons listed.

Just to clarify. I am a trapper, hunter, fisherman, and avid four wheeler. I agree that a 70 was probably better for those aplications BUT the scarcity and initial cost just didn't add up. Could not find a 70 series that was even close to the price I got my 80 for and I would have to do a lot of engine work (turbo) to get a rig I would be happy towing with.

I LOVE 70's, and someday I will own a flat bed 70, but as a dd/everthing else rig the 1-hdt 81 with a 5 speed can't be beat! (go ahead wayne let me have it!)

if you are happy, that is all that matters ...

Wow....that sounds like a quote from a Miss America contestant.
I guess a wish for world peace will come next. What ever alien force has taken the real Wayne, please return him.:)

What's wrong with world peace ?????

LOL

I think the HZJ81 sounds nice enough but the 1HZ is gutless on a Canadian highway through BC without a turbo. Turbos are not cheap and could offset the savings.

If done for the simplicity of the vehicle then I understand.

For me my want for a 77 was enough to offset the cost of a turbo and mods. That and I like a vehicle that I have to modify and work on to make it suit my needs. A 77 is more work, time, and money for some that's a bit of bonus and worth it for having something a little more different.

It is no mystery to me why there are so many 81's out there. They seem nice and are a ready set go and appeal to a larger crowd that use there vehicle as a DD and a weekend warrior instead of a trail rig

This is a funny thread with lots of opinions. In the end these trucks really are not well comparable and you should decide whether you want to go for the 'cool and unique' or for the more practical.

A 77 sure is nice. As said, it will need a turbo, parts cost more and are rarer, and it has less space.

The 80s are plentiful, the 1HDT is a great engine (a 2 year old can change the BEBs), lots of space, lost of aftermarket support, dirt cheap parts from wrecked US 80s. And the seats are better for a semi old guy with a questionable back by a mile.
To call an 80 less capable off road is simply nonsense and will depend on how the truck is built and the driver. It's hard to stop a locked 80 though.

The H151H is a fine tranny. Yes, it could use a taller 5th gear. No, it won't break. I had one apart very recently and it is without doubt as beefy if not beefier than the H55F. It shifts fine and will last as long as the engine, and is easier rebuilt than the H55F.

Get what makes you happier. If you won't stop smiling when sitting in a 77, get the 77 and smile.
cheers,
Jan

Seems the OP posted in the section to be convinced to get the 77. Wouldn't be surprised if the OP ends up with an 81.

Wonder how this thread would go if it was posted in the 80 series section, or better yet the Diesel section...

well, most 80 owners want a 77 but can't get them so one might be surprised with the results in the 80 section
the diesel section? in reality it is just a excellent diesel engine wrapped in tin. there is a fetish for the HDT, even though it isn't the best engine Toyota makes. bigger is usually better in most peeps minds so it would be the engine and not the sheet metal as the reason to go 81.
now, if you were to make the offer the HZJ81 vrs the HZJ77 the poll would definately lean towards the 77 easily.

This is sorta like the chicken and egg argument and will not be solved in my life time.:)

you kind of let me down, I was expecting a blast LOL. I think it is a little funny because I was in contact with you on a few occations looking for a 70 flatbed. I think you were selling that one from the tokyo fire department for 30-40 Grand? Oh well I acually have a lead on an 85 70 flatty right now so I might get the best of both worlds OHHH YAHHH!

you mean this one?
yah, i can not sell it like you can pick up ex-mine trucks for ...:hhmm:

but then it isn't a beat up POS that needs $20K in work ... ;)
