I happened to notice that my recently purchased 1994 HDJ81, which has no lockers, says "limited slip" on the rear diff. So I guess that needs special gear oil.

Do these trucks not have a limited slip in the centre, as well? I really thought my 1996 FZJ80 has one.

No limited slip in the center. Yes, when you change the the fluid make sure you look for oil that states it's safe for LSDs or has friction modifiers in it.

You can also get a small bottle of the friction modifier additive and I assume add it to whatever flavor diff fluid you like to use. I'm not 100% sure on that though.

My Toyota master mechanic buddy swears by ford LSD additive. Ford... toyota. I know....

The Viscous Coupler in the center diff of the newer 80 series trucks acts like an LSD is my understanding, but not a true LSD. I don't think mine has the VC.

One option for the diff would be Mobil 1 gear oil; if you get chatter you can boost it with more LS additive. Same gear oil without the additive for the transfer case.
