Hi Everyone, I'm relatively new here (been lurking for a while) and I'm interested in buying an HDJ81. While doing my research I have yet to see a 5spd HDJ81 with cruise control. Does cruise exist on the 5spd?

Thanks to everyone for a great info resource. I am a little nervous about buying an import but this community has eased my apprehension and I think it's the rig for me.

Cheers

Hello and welcome ,

Sorry I never saw your thread.

I am not sure about cruiser and a 5-speed.
I just took a quick look, and could not find one.
Hopefully others will know.

Cheers,
Nick

Barry,

I've got a five speed and/but mine does not have a cruise, either.

Mine's a VX so it might have been possible that VX Limited might have come with one. But not sure if you could have gotten the Limited with 5spd.

Have you got a rig lined up?

Thanks Guys. I'll have to see if an aftermarket cruise can be installed easily.

No rig lined up yet (unless you count drooling over Crusher's white 5spd on Luxury Imports website). I'm taking my time and learning as much as I can before pulling the trigger.

How do you like the 5 spd? any issues?

Cheers

The 5speed has a different gear ratio that the AT.
This really bugged me. I think the 5pseed has a final drive of 15% lower.
I really wanted a 5pseed, but I did not like the fact that with 33" tires I woulod have to go 2600rpm to go 100kph (higher rpms with 31's). I would of put 35's on if I had a 5 speed. That would of given me more clearance and fixed the RPM issue.

I am not sure if you want bigger tires, but it would be a good way to go.

I did quite a few posts about 5 speeds and HDJ81's.
Take a read. I discussed the RPM thing quite a bit.

Cheers and welcome.

great Nick, thanks for your wisdom. hmmm, 35's....:D

I'll read through the 5spd posts. Just saw that Mustang Connections is bringing in a 5 spd, I'll sniff around that one.

BTW, was the factory winch availible without FR and RR diff locks?

cheers

Probably Nick's feedback is better suited for you than mine since he's in Canada and I'm in Japan.

I did not think I would enjoy driving a 5spd here with so many cars and traffic lights on the road. But it's quite the opposite.

I prefer 5spd to AT but this was the first one that has gobs of torgue. And that makes it a lot easier, being able to start in 2nd gear if I wished, etc...

I can see where Nick is coming from about the gear ratio though.
If I had the $$$ I would go with bigger tires and that should take care of the gearing problem.

I've been somewhat obsessed with getting better mpg lately.
Doing mainly stop and go driving I managed to do 9.14kms/litre the last tank. That was with my ac on a lot of the time, and with A LOT of coasting whenever possible.

This time I'm shooting for 9.5 or even better!
Anyway, sorry, I guess you didn't ask for any of these...

The rpm issue can be overcome with bigger tires or don't let it bother you if your tach is stuck on 3,000rpm or higher while cruising down freeway (I get used to it after cruising on the express way for like 30sec;) ).

In short, if you love driving manual tranny, then I would not hesitate in getting one in a heartbeat.

Mot,

I also have a VX Limited but I doubt it's a 5 speed. I get to 120kph at about 2200 rpm and my gear ratio is still 4.11 as evidenced by that turning the tires and counting the turns of the Driveshaft test thingy. I'm rather content with mine as is.

Your mileage is impressive to me. 9kms/liter is sort of a dream for me. I get 8 on the highway and about 5 in stop and go, all with the air con always on and normal driving.

I try to pay attention to the chagning road/traffic coditions and try to drive accordingly.

If I see that the light is red far down the road and I do not have some one riding my butt I let my foot of the gas, cut the clutch and just coast, trying not to have to slow down too much or come to a stop.

The last two tanks of gas I haven't let my rev go past beyond 1200rpm before shifting from dead stop. I haven't floored it for a long time and believe me, it's REALLY difficult for me not to step on it when some punk is trying to be cool.:flipoff2:  :flipoff2:

Anyway, I kind of think of it as a game.
If I get better mileage/litre when I fill up, then I win. If I figure out a better way to drive, I win. :D

I don't know how much longer I can drive like this though.
Although it has become almost second nature the naughty side of me whispers to me to say "The hell with it!"
