Insurance will likely write the bid with that on it regardless of the availability.

Of course a person could almost certainly buy a whole FJ80 for less than the cost of the roof skin.

Random, but how do insurance companies come up with this totaled salvage value? The few times I've been in the position the price they gave me was NOT pennies on the dollar and it seemed too much to pay for a totaled car.
 
That sounds really LOW considering the amount of area they would have to repaint on the roof, remove / replace the sunroof, and the labor involved. Make sure they aren't quoting you a Maaco job with a gallon of Bondo and a paint brush....

When I went through it their initial price was way to high. But they were open to haggling and they really aren't going to get much for it at auction anyway so they are happy to deal. I just did the usual auto sales trick in telling them what I would pay, and to call me when they would accept it.
Usually doesn't take long.

I did this for 2 of my old toyota 4x4 pickups both after roll overs. They were so old at the time of the accidents.

I'm guessing get to the back side and punch it flat-ish (or weld a stud to the outside, pull it out, grind the stud off), bondo skimcoat it, sand, prime, and paint blend it into the rest of the roof.
 
Yep I just went through this and it was a pain, but worked out ok in the end.

Every state has a slightly different law and it seems like everyshop has some hidden motives.

The shop quote you have for $2000 is just to get you in the door. Once they have the truck in possesion they will definitely be sending supplimental claims to your insurance company as they "find" new things.

While this is good that they are finding things and fixing them it can get you close to the "totaled amount" of your vehicle. If you can get that amount out of your insurance adjuster it would be in your favor. I sent my engine rebuild receipts, my turbo receipts, parts receipts, line-x, etc and he let it slip that my totalled amount was over $15k. And in Texas it is 100% of the value of the vehicle to actually total it so I knew I could push the autobody shop to fix everything I wanted up to almost $15k... It obviously didn't get that high, but the initial quote was $2900 and after all was said and done it was over $5k.

I would be willing to bet they will just spot weld on some of those "rivots" and use a puller to pull the dents out, smooth them with bondo and get them cleaned up and spray them. Hard to tell the extent of the damage in the pics, but it looks about like mine was and I know that is what they did because I found the rivots in the channel behind the hood when I opened the hood.

Good luck, get as many receipts as you have, or get replacement quotes if you don't have receipts for parts and send them all to the insurance company.
 
Boo! That sucks! Sorry to hear about your bad luck.

And you were worried about banging yoir diffs off rocks. But hey now you won't have to worry about denting your truck on the trail any more ;)
 
That stinks man. Hope they fix you up right.

If it makes you feel any better I'm reading this on the shoulder of I-40 with Heat related stall and no start issue.
 
A recent storm blew my basketball hoop over. The hoop/pole hit the roof of my company car denting it in two places. Both dents were smaller than the OP's and the repair bill came to $5700, and no sunroof. That said it is a company lease and no one scrutinizes anything. Seems every place I take that car for service is very happy to hear that all repair bills go direct to the leasing company, I feel I am a mark:meh:

Things would have been different if there had been any suspected structural damage...
The A-pillar is structural.

The low quote is the body shop's way of keeping the insurance company from going straight to writing it off. Once in the door I've seen supplemental claims go way past the declared value of a vehicle.
 
I'm going to take it to another shop an old high school buddy of mine runs. I just want it done right if I'm going to get it done.
