Hatch edge trim (1 Viewer)

PO did a subpar job putting some trim on the edge of the rear hatch. What might this be for? I’m thinking of just removing.

All I can think of is that they didn’t want to scratch it up while loading and unloading stuff. Or they’re already covering up existing scars.

There wouldn’t be a second thought in removing that if it were mine :) Get some goof off and clean it up.
 
I’m happy to remove and clean up. I was wondering if that’s an especially vulnerable spot, helps prevent leaks, or some other purpose. Even if there is a good reason for that I think I can do a better job!
 
Get that junk off of there yesterday. It’s either covering a problem that needs to be fixed or it’s causing a problem that will need to be fixed.
