I have a 1984 Troopy that I just got and it will not start cold without Starting Fluid(2H Diesel). Once warm it fires right away...... How do I check the glow plug system and figure out what is not working? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I do not want to start it any more using the Starting Fluid for fear of damaging the engine..

Yes.

Here's some reading:

For your 2H you should be able to put a multimeter on the plug busbar, grounding to the head, to see if the relay is putting voltage to the plugs. You can also pull each plug to see if it heats up and ohm them for proper resistance (see the threads in the search or a FSM).

In my recent experience you probably have multiple dead plugs and a new set will set things right.

It turns out it was a broken wire that goes from the + terminal to a black junction box with two wires in it. I re-connected it an now it starts like a champ.

Congrats! Nice when it's easy!

2 glow plug clicks

You should wait for the 2nd click which takes about 20 seconds after the first click to get full glow plug function. You'll see the volt meter register more volts as well. Mine goes from about 18 volts on the 1st click to 24 volts on the 2nd click.
