Are there any easy hand throttle mods? The OEM hand throttle seems to be pretty hard to source,
I wondered if there was a standard solution.
I bodged something together on my 40 at the carb, and it worked, but if I knew the right length cable, it seemed like
connecting it up to the OEM location would be pretty easy.. maybe a universal choke cable?

Would the FJ80 hand throttle work?

Thanks,

Eric-

for a 60? I would think you could source a 62 hand throttle very easily, it just attaches to a riser off the foot pedal.

This one is working great for me. :)

What year 60 /62 series are we dealing with here to start ?

i have both 60 /62 Series Complete Plug and Play all OEM Toyota genuine parts kits in-stock

re-trofitting some generic parts from the pep-boyz speed shop isle , will be both a frustrating waist of time and potentially very dangerous
when it hangs up and you experience un-intended acceleration into the non-land cruiser car in front of you or a brick wall of some kind ?

PM me please for further info etc.

thanks matt

Matt,

With all due respect, and I mean that sincerely, why fear monger/denigrate? This is a perfectly workable solution that even has a working emergency stop button that you can mash in the event of the situation you describe. A more realistic case is if you need to slow down abruptly while running forest roads with the throttle engaged.

One of the things that I love about this board is the plethora of ways (and examples) that people come up with to accomplish different cruiser objectives... this mod is just another example.

I've been using this mechanism for two years now and it works great.

Best,

-Ophir

well..............

i suppose i should have added this to my above ? 🤔

when i was in high school circa 1990-1992 , age 17 , i made a home-made hand throttle set up based on the color photos is a Spector OFF Road yearly parts catalogue , while on my first test drive , it got stuck in the full pulled engaged position , i did not know what to do except turn the ign. key off , it continued to accelerate from a dieseling method i still do not understand full with key OFF

i crashed into my Parents Neighbors all decked our conversion van crushing is the side right in the middle , i was traveling a solid 20-25 mph by that time . was not wearing my 3 point 12/78 FJ40 seat belt , and my chest , center breast bone hit the steering wheel outer ring fracturing it hair line ....

so ...........

i apologize if my post appeared was interpreted to fear monger , that was in no way my intention Ophir ......

i was only sharing my experience ,

and should have added also , the OP's insurance company Totaled a fairly new conversion Van as a result of my home made hand throttle
a curious , teenager with his first car / land cruiser made after school one day before his parents got home in there 2 car garage , now his
fledgling mini skunk-works laboratory to be ...........:)

kindly

Not criticizing, but curious what your intended use is for the hand throttle? Crawling, manual warm up idle control, winching etc? I assume the original hand throttle was intended for use with a PTO winch?

I retrofitted one to my 100 thinking I would use it to get max alternator output for my m12k winch but I never use it. If I need to get a full pull out of my winch I'm always in the vehicle with my foot on the brake anyway, and it's easy enough to just rev it with the pedal. It was a PITA to install, due mostly to sourcing and fitting a foreign-market 105 knee panel with mounting recess for the pull knob and cutting off the pedal counterweight.

Certainly seems it would be easier to install on a 60 but as it turns out on my 100, I did it more because it was a "cool mod" and relatively inexpensive. I wouldn't bother again.

Very easy to add a hand throttle from a FJ62 to a FJ60. I have one in my 60 and use it to bump the engine speed during engine warm up sometimes, almost always when winching, and when running the 12 v air compressor. I don't use it often but find it to be very handy when needed.

I think everyone here knows hand throttles of any type were never meant to be used as cruise controls. I don't think anything said here is news to anyone regarding the risks involved in tying a cable directly to a gas pedal and wouldn't induce a sense of fear above and beyond good old common sense. @Ophir's solution seems like a solid one if going down the road of the hand throttle and the only thing keeping me from implementing it is my purist heart and the aforementioned common sense. If I did go hand throttle I would shoot for the OEM option first just to keep the OEM stuff. But have to admit @Ophir's solution is pretty slick. Long drives are a beat down without cruise control in this thing. My foot hurts after about an hour. So mulling it over.

Not to hijack this thread all over the place, but are there any proven aftermarket cruise control systems that can be retrofitted to these trucks? Funny question after just spouting off about my OEM inclination, but it would be nice to be able to give my foot a rest on long trips.
