He said..."you're going to be one of those old guys with beards talking to other guys with old beards in Stockholm..."

Kinda like this guy?

I have noticed the same thing. There is a HIGH percentage of old guys with beards in ham radio. Not just old guys.... old guys with beards. (Sorry Jon, this is definitely NOT directed at you. You look 20 years younger than your chronological age and I don't consider you as an old guy. I consider Dan an old guy and he looks the part. Well, maybe you look the part too but Dan looks more the part than you do. Well, maybe Steve also looks the part but his beard is shorter. Not as short as Evan's beard but Evan isn't old. Evan doesn't even have an old man beard... more of a GQ man beard. Evan looks old, but he is young. Ali is definitely the GQ man beard. I haven't seen Ron in a long time and I've forgotten what he looked like. Rory and I look young, virile, and have no beards last I looked. Note to self: Shorten the parenthetical thoughts.)

Where were we? Yep. There are a lot of old guys with beards in ham radio. I have no idea why though.

While I was waiting to take my General exam I sat in on a ARES/RACES meeting. They were trying to better coordinate emergency response in NM with state agencies. I've noticed this before, but there is a definite ham culture. They are a interesting bunch. For the most part these are retired fellas with time to spare. There were some younger folks mixed in, and some ladies. But mostly older guys, not necessary with beards.

I still want to get an antenna on the roof so I'll be prepared for the day when I'm an old fella with time to spare.

Whew! I'm just glad he left me out of it. Probably knew my fragile ego couldn't handle being called old, young, geek, GQ, beardless, ......

I attempted to get into HAM radio when I was in my late teens as part of a Boy Scout project but back then the tests were harder and you had to learn Morse Code to get an appropriate license that allowed you to actually talk to people. I failed the Tech-no code test and didn't get licensed. I noticed the same odd culture of old guys, usually techie types, usually retired, and lots of beards.

Here is a thought...

HAM=Hair Around Mouth. ? ? ?

my sentiments exactly :D

but you did leave out the young looking, beardless non-ham nerd (Marc)

I left out a lot of people because it was mainly directed toward those that have become Amateur Radio Operators. Dan was thrown in there because he has a beard and he never visits our club forum any more. Marc will get licensed some day because he wants to be like me when he grows up.

Wow, it's amazing what happens when we let him ramble on like that!

Thanks Rory. I feel better now. I have HAM-envy.

But I want to grow up to be like Evan. He has more toys and lives in the mountains. And he's GQ.

I need more length and distance.

:grinpimp:

Don't we all....

Why don't you and Evan pool your orders together to save on shipping? Just a thought.

make sure you have some grey in it. Otherwise you'll kill the stereotype.

I use "A Touch of Gray". You can get it a Walgreens.

HAM Equipment Survey

I was going to post a new thread asking everyone to list their current HAM equipment until I found this thread. But it's about 3 years old and I'm sure many of you have upgraded in that time with new folks getting their ticket and equipment in the last 3 years too. Plus, this thread stayed on topic for a few posts and then got derailed by the usual suspects.

I'd like to know what the collective 'wisdom' of the club is regarding radios, mounts, antennae, etc. Who has what and why? I'd prefer to learn from others experiences as well as buy something that at least a few other people have and like. It will make it easier for me to learn how to use it.

Seems like I've seen some common themes regarding what some of the club members own: Yaesu FT-2900, FT-8800 and Kenwood TM-D710.

Marc.

Yeah, I read that one already. I posted in it yesterday you goof.

FWIW i am still happy with my

kenwood TM-D710
Diamond K400SNMO trunk lip mount with 13.5' of coax
SBB1NMO dual band rubber duck 18"

i have added 2 external speakers, one for each side of the radio and did the over the mirror remote head mount, ala junkyard rearview mount.

the vx5 sits in the center console and gets loaned out, usually with a dead battery.
