Good luck on your test. If you can consistently pass the free on-line practice tests it will be a breeze.

Hmm. I might consider it. There is a birthday party at my house that day though. I'll see what kind of resistance I get.

You can probably be out of there by 10:00 AM. The test itself won't take more than 45 minutes, then some waiting around while they complete the paperwork. Home in plenty of time for your party!

thanks John, any reccomendations for an all in one "guidebook" for ham?

Hi Ron, i know there are books, but i'm cheap and lazy so i have just been taking the free online tests i can find, I'm sure Daisy or Ali (or others) can fill in blanks if i missed some better sites. I can usually get in the 85+% just from some painful trial and error now (and i've taken a LOT of them). i'd suggest taking a few on qrz for per question feedback and see how you do. the spots i am weak in is the "this class can use these frequencies" and ok most other places. once you take a bunch i kinda started to get a feel for what they were after in categories etc...

I bought the Technician Class guide book by Gordon West. The online exams do cover the test questioins to a tee. Just take it a whole bunch of times until you memorize the answers. The book is nice because it gives you the reason to the answer. I have not finished reading it, but you or anyone can borrow it if you want to look through it before the test. Just let me know.

I used the podcasts and online tests passed both Tech and General all the same night. Really not that bad the Extra now thats another animal

Its been over 15 years since I took my exam. Many of us on search and rescue did what we called the "wheezer method". This is for a Tech lic.

Buy "Now Your Talking" from Radio Shack. Read the question and answer (and only the answer) from the 300 questions in the back of the book until you have the questions and answers memorized. You will be amazed how little time it takes to memorize the questions and answers.

Take your exam then go back and read the book.

You better pass the test 'cause if you don't that eight year old sitting next to you will make you look bad!

I bought the ARRL book for my Technician Class and the Gordon West book for my General Class. The Gordon West book was much better organized and easier to read and understand than the ARRL book IMO. Would highly recommend them.

I might have to get my general class since i'm unemployed at the moment and need to do some reading....won't be ready for this upcoming test though.

well i plan to go by borders and B&N to look at ham review books tomorrow. apparently there is a "HAM for dummies" and no it's not next to "breakfast for dummies"...

legit

well i passed technician... didn't try general (it would have been free), figured i haven't even looked at a question for it and i should get home to help out the family that is all sick.

the test was all computer based and graded (they used the computer lab at manzano multi center), there were about 27 people who took exams. half a dozen or so were taking extras. i believe all passed.

so i should have a call sign the end of this week. now i just need to find a handheld to start out with...

congrats! You might want to talk to Jon about the geek package he was thinking about. I think it came with a pocket protector and mesh cap with call signs. I do think he gave up on the idea though.

thanks Rudy, geek package is right up my alley! ;):D:p

I couldn't get a hall pass like I'd hoped. Congrats on passing.

Congratulations John! You're officially part of the geek club now.
