h55/split t-case question (1 Viewer)

So I am putting an h55 in my fj40. I had a later model(74-78) 4 speed(h41?) in it with the matching yoter t-case. My question is does the old cross member have a different bolt pattern than the one on the split case that goes with the h55? (I haven't gotten the split case yet so if you have one let me know) Thanks!!

There is no crossmember with the H41 tranny- it would have hung off the bellhousing mounts. Toyota never made a single piece case cradle tranny mount.

What year? The later split case models had cradle mounts.

AFAIK the only single case cradle mount is under my truck, and Toyota didn't put it there.

Now I have to think but i think it was a 79 or 80. HJ and ill know for sure what it was i pulled in a week or so when i can look at it.

If your old trans had a crossmember under the tranmission ... yes, it will bolt on
same as your 4 speed.

thanks Dave! thats what i needed to know, looks like the person that put the 4 speed and single piece t-case put in a crossmember upon installing it, as it it a 72 and came stock with the 3-spd

I HAVE seen a homemade crossmember on the 78 and newer trans that utilized the three bolts on the rear xtnsn housing plate as an anchor point. If the H41 had a factory mount, it would be on the BOTTOM of the trans, not from the back, and it would have 4 bolts that face up. Hth

Hi All:

Just to re-inforce Mark's statement, the transmission crossmember for the 60/70 Series vehicles is *under* the transmission, not at the bellhousing (like on the earlier 40/45/55 Series.)

So, to swap a H55F into a "F" or "2F" power FJ40 will require the "split" type transfer case, new drive shafts, a different transmission crossmember, longer parking brake cable (or switching to a rear axle mounted parking brake), modifications to the transmission "hump" I imagine, and other things I'm forgetting!

An "easy" way to get an overdrive of sorts is to swap from 4.1 ratio differential gears to 3.7 ratio.

Yea I wish I could just change gears but both my old t-case and transmission need to be rebuilt, so that is the way I chose to go.

The weight of the tranny/case sits on the rib under the tranny, and attaches to two of the three bottom holes of the extension. It has held up the ranger/h42/case setup now in two different trucks, and I haven't had any problems with it.
