I'm nearing the end of my engine/tranny/tansfer case swap and I have issues. Just went to pull the rig out of the garage for the first time in 6 months and something is amiss. When in reverse, if I push the clutch in the rig jolts to a stop- as if I'm hitting the brakes. I thought that maybe my rear drums where over-tightened but the rear wheel spin freely when it up on stands.

Here's the swap info:

  • 1986 2F with H55 and '86 split case
  • Emergency brake "drum" conversion. Just happen to find one!!!
  • Split case was opened and rear output shafts where swapped to accomidate the "drum parking brake conversion"
  • H55 was in a running 60 that I drove prior to pulling. Nothing in the H55 was touched except to install the transfer case.
Any ideas?

Ebrake is grabbing and causing this.

If the adjusting assembly is not in correctly it can cause a shoe to drag and create this scenario.

Ebrake was also a thought- backed it off all the way as well, same results. I'm thinking that gears maybe misaligned under the top cover. Currently looking for a schematic of the gear alignment before I pull the top cover. Please send one if anybody has one.

E-brake

Thought I followed the manual correctly. See anything wrong?

I'm thinking about removing the shoes, reassembling, and checking results.

Good plan.

Leave the shoes off, put the drum back on and see what happens.

Post up what you learn please.

You don't have the hubs locked and the transfer case in 4wd do you? Binding up on dry turns?

That oil shouldn't be dripping all down your shoes--bad seal?

Good seal- I pulled the drum off. The drum's shaft is what contacts the seal to prevent leaks.

Nope, front drive shaft isn't even installed yet.

By what I'm reading it sounds like you can put it in reverse and it will roll until you push in the clutch then it jolts to a stop. Is that correct. If so I would look at the clutch. If it will roll only one direction no matter what it could be something wrong with the E brake shoes install. What happens in other gears? Does this only happen in reverse? Is the shifter installed correct so it not trying to move it into to gears at the same time? If the shifter isn't installed correctly that is what it can do?

It only happens in reverse. All forward gears work/roll properly. As far as I know everything is installed properly.

Finally got back to working on this thing. Today I noticed that when I started it in neutral the rear tires where spining until I pushed in the clutch. When I let the clutch back out they begin spining again. I did re-check the drum break install and I believe that it is correct. Because I was in there, I installed a brand new parking break cable. Here's a couple of pictures. Let me know if something isn't right

Did you try this?

That's my next step... Sorry Poser.

Pulled my rear cover off and noticed this. I'm thinking that the rear output shaft maybe jammed in too far.

Who put this together?
