Can someone educate me on the differences between an H and a 2H motor. I'm a looking at an HJ45 and I would like to know what I'm getting into.

Thanks,
Michael <><

The H is an older design that I think dates to the early 70s. The 2H and the H really don't have much of anything in common other than they are 6 cylinder indirect injected engines with inline pumps.

The H does not accept a turbo well. I learned that lesson. There's a thread here somewhere about my experiences with a turbo on an H.

The H is very difficult to find parts for in North America. It was never used in any production vehicles here. (Some Toyota forklifts used the engine.) Plan to order most things from SOR or overseas. I believe SOR has been selling off most of their H inventory so it's getting harder to source simple things like oil filters.

I have no direct experience but I've always imagined the difference between an H and a 2H to be similar to the difference between a pre-1980 2977cc B engine and a post-1980 3431cc 3B engine.

I still like my pre-1980 B and I find it very reliable and low-maintence.

But I wouldn't turbo it.

I have owned both and the pair are relatively simple ( reliable ) Diesel engines. Neither one have a surplus of power but they get the job done.

The H is a 3.6 litre, 2H is 4 litre. The H is more susceptible to cracking heads and is a fair bit slower. About the only parts commonality between the two that I can think of is the thermostat.

Thanks!!

Thanks for all of your input gentlemen. I appreciate the education. One more question though, is there anyway to tell the difference between the two in a picture? I'm in the market for an HJ/FJ45 so I need to know what I'm looking at in these adds. I had one guy tell me that all diesel 6 cylinders from Costa Rica were 2H's. But has his truck advertised as a 3.6L. HA HA!! Buyer beware.

Thanks,
Michael <><

I think the valve covers are very different. Every 2H I have seen in photos has a crankcase vent tube. The H doesn't have a crankcase vent in the valve cover. I don't know if all 2H years have the vent tube but it's the easiest feature I've found to quickly tell what's under the bonnet.

Might require a mirror of some sort but the 2H has "2H" stamped on the block. (Fairly large letters )

In this photo the 2H stamp is lower right.
I was under the impression ( perhaps incorrectly ) that the 2H didn't show up until the HJ47 was introduced.

Well, it was introduced in the 60 series at the same time. Not sure if it was expressly designed for one or the other first, or both.
