Hi, I am considering buying a hj-45 with the H engine. Are they really reliable? thanks in advance for any advise

have not heard of them being any less reliable than other toyota diesels, but getting a bit old compared to the plethora of 2H 47s and 60s appearing atm.

Depending on the year of manufacture it will be either a H or 2H.
Definately no reliability problems and one of the cheapest diesels to repair in Australia.

Just make sure it starts easy in the morning after its been sitting overnight.
If it doesnt ,it may have a compression problem and needs further investigation.

I think a 12HT in a HJ45 would be one of the sweetest engine swaps ever:D

What does a 2H head swap on an H engine give you?
Thanks,

the 2h head bolts right up to the H?

I thought yes .. but never do it by myself.

The H motor is fine. 2H is better as the oiling was better or so I'm told from a few cruiser guru's. Getting parts is not a problem. You didn't say where you were from, but even in the USA, it's no big deal.
