Gutter mount questions (1 Viewer)

A few questions about gutter mounts for a roof rack:

1. My rain gutters have a squishy caulking inside. When you mount a roof rack with gutter mounts, do you remove this caulking where the mounts sit so they are flush against the metal and the load is evenly distributed?
2. Did you remove the trim piece that goes along the gutters or leave it in place?

I left that gooey caulking where it is. It will "help" keep your roof rack mounts from moving.
I didn't have any trim pieces and the gutter mounts totally scratched up the outside paint of the gutter mount.
You'll hear from people that the trim doesn't provide any purpose. I disagree.
If that trim was there, it would have prevented the gutter paint from getting scratched from the roof rack gutter mount.

Typically no, but that is depends on the gutter mounts and installation I suppose.. My yakima 1a's cleared fine. Keep the calking. I don't remember the exact reason for it, but there is one. Was described some where in the archives here.
