Going to be replacing the starter in my 85 FJ60 soon (after I get clutch slave cylinder worked out -- see my post from earlier today). While I was replacing the CSC yesterday I noticed a ton of funk (old oil and other stuff) that PO had let build up. Before I get into the starter, can anyone recommend a product to get clean up the old gunk? Gunk Off recommends staying away from electrical connections. Suggestions?

putty knife, some rags and some superclean. garden hose and some compressed air. nothing replaces elbow grease tho...

I used the industrial purple degreaser from Home Despot and a pressure washer. Works great. But as Lamb, says, taking a putty knife to it first and some elbow grease helps alot. Warm day helps, too.

I used a nearby car wash. Nearby is important so the engine isn't warm.
Covered the dizzy & coil w/aluminum foil.
Used engine cleaner setting at car wash, and cleaned up the engine/bay/axles/etc.
Then sprayed engine degreaser where-ever needed.
Closed hood, washed car.
Opened hood, used engine cleaner setting to go over the engine/axles/etc one more time (removed the degreaser).
End result was pretty clean. Much easier to work on.

I do not think you want to spray engine degreaser on a hot engine...there may be some bad s*** in that stuff and if it volatilezes and you breath it into your lungs who knows what could happen.

This is true, but in Kalif they made them remove whatever it was and now does not work so well... But quarter wash is a good idea. Really gets s*** everywhere that's a mess to clean if you have to do it in your driveway.

I spread a damn large tarp out and drive over it, before blasting.

1. Apply Engine De-greaser
2. Drive to local DIY car wash
3. Cover dizzy
4. Pressure wash motor, being careful to avoid wiring

Steam cleaners also work really well.

a real steam cleaner pressure washer is the finial solution...but you have to really careful if you have access to one, steam and high pressure equal peeling paint and damaging areas you might not want to "clean". It will clean about anything and do so in short order...many years ago a shop I worked in had one....it was the "cats meow"...on nasty stuff. I will also burn your @$$ if you are not careful with how you hold the wand... serious tool. I' know this is open to "one liners" but I said it anyway :)

What, you think the OP is Harry Potter ?

just a way with words.... If you have not seen a steam cleaner at work... it literally will peel your paint off your fender just like it will clean the greasy engine.... some people may not realize what a real steam pressure cleaner can do.

I have no clue who the OP is..... just fair warning posted .. the word "wand" kind of got your attention huh? :)
