There is too much info out there so figured I’d come here. one of the best no BS spots in the world 😂.

It’s time for a new grill. I don’t need anything fancy but willing to pay a premium for quality/something that won’t rust from the inside out like my last one.

Weber seems to be the answer. Any other suggestions?

I grew up with charcoal and it tastes so much better. It’s tempting but gas is so easy. Worth considering something like a big green egg?

Last question I promise. Is there a best time to buy? Before grilling season? Memorial Day or Father’s Day sales?

personally I love the Weber Performer ; it’s a charcoal grill with a gas start; you can hook up a larger propane tank

my dad has this copper one which is nicer than mine - I’m not sure if they make it anymore
Weber 15501001 Performer Deluxe Charcoal Grill, 22-Inch, Touch-N-Go gas ignition system, Copper Amazon product

Quick enough for throwing on some dogs or a burger during the work week for lunch?

I would personally contact TRD directly via there tech line

And scoop up a Stainless Steel Mesh style while they still have them

And a NON USA 70 series badge is icing on your cake too

to go with all your hot dogs 🌭

A Big Green Egg is not a casual tool. I have one and love it for smoking or long indirect cooking (think of a wood fueled oven) but honestly rarely use it as a simple grill. Its benefit is in heat retention, which isn’t required in a ‘normal’ grill. In fact, gas grills are the worst at that, so that should tell you something about what to look for vs how you want to cook.

I have had many different charcoal grills in my life but only recently bought a full size Weber kettle grill. I’m really happy with the results of normal and slow cook usage. The one I got was about $130 last July and came with a grill grate that has a removable center section for their proprietary junk. It’s a pain in the ass to work around when simply cooking burgers because stuff gets caught in all the joints and seams. Had to buy a $20 standard replacement grate to be happy.

Like you, I’ve always wanted a gas grill for the convenience but have just never done it. That will change this spring when I get one for the lake house but only because we’re discussing renting it out this year. I don’t mind the extra hassle of time and materials to use charcoal, myself. Just get a Weber or Oklahoma Joe chimney starter and you’ll be ready to cook in 10-20 minutes. Gas does make it simple to just walk out and light then use 15 minutes later, but how you plan to use it makes all the difference.

I can write a few books worth of crap here about this so I’ll end it here instead. Hit me up for any additional thoughts.

If you are serious about grilling I highly recommend Traeger grills.

If you are serious about grilling I highly recommend Traeger. The quality of the cooking compared to gas is shocking.

grew up only using Weber kettles and my dad refuses anything else. Sounds like the propane start Weber combo might be exactly what I need

I'm of little to no direct help with the topic, but this is the year I will be replacing our current setup which is a 19 year old Lynx freestanding LP unit.
She's been rebuilt twice and nearly every part has gone NLA since the last overhaul. The grill has been amazing, like a work of art in stainless, but she's off to the scrapper this year. Prior to the Lynx we always had mid range Webers, and would get 3 to 4 years out of them. Good value for the money, but they can't produce the heat that the Lynx can. Everything is a trade off, I guess.

So I'm leaning toward another LP grill, but much smaller... in the 30-36" range. And much more reasonable price point. And then perhaps making the leap into the world of offset smokers to fulfill the creative side of outdoor cooking. I really don't want a grill that talks to my phone. Or relies on motors or circuit boards. They have their place, but I've got an itch to get my hands dirty and embrace the slow cook. I dunno, maybe it's a bad idea.

Weber gas grills hold up really well. Even have screens in the intake air vents for the burners to keep spiders out.

I'm in the market for a new LP grill as well. I've been running a Ducane (bought by Weber out of bankruptcy) for 12 years and it's mostly done well for me. I've replaced burners and heat dispersing trays a couple times. Other than the under burner grease tray it's held up very well. My biggest issue with it is grease flare ups. I cook a lot of burgers using 80/20 (not that sissy 90/10 lean crap) so it can be a big problem. I'm hoping the new LP grills are better with flare ups. Prices for grills have gone up significantly the past couple years and I don't expect them to go back down so I'm probably going to pull the trigger on one soon.

I get irritated by all the features companies are adding to grills nowadays. I don't want a sear station that'll get ruined the first time a burger's worth of grease drips on it. I don't want valuable grill space taken up by a smoke box that barely works. I've never used the dumb side burner on my grill but those are ubiquitous. Light up knobs, seriously?? Tank gauges....any serious grill man always has a spare tank ready to go. "Smart" enabled so I have to install another app on my phone, no thanks. Give me instant high BTU fire under big cold rolled SS grates with a heavy gauge SS cabinet and hood and that's all I need.

Gas grill companies have perfected the art of giving you either usability or value.

When I eventually buy a gas grill for convenience it'll be a cheap model that I'll expect to put at the curb in 3 years. I'll be more concerned about the grates than anything else when shopping.

@iptman I've heard from a few friends that some of the infrared models do really well with burgers. Haven't looked into it, myself, so it's all just conjecture at this point.

2nd for weber if what you want is a gas grill. Also look on Nextdoor. There are plenty of people selling 1-2 year old grills for less than 1/4 the price new. Green egg is nice but its a hassle to use since its charcoal. TBH if you want something like a charcoal grill without the hassle I would get a Traeger. I love mine

I have a few different ones. Im not a big fan of charcoal for fast burger/hotdog just because of the amount of time it takes to get the coals ready then they last for hours after your done cooking. My main LP grill died during july of 2020 which was not a great time to buy grills as no one had them. I was going to buy a big weber LP but coudn't find one. I picked up a Blackstone and its been awesome. I cook everything from breakfast to chicken fried rice. I use my camping LP grill at the house if I need something cooked quick. I use a Lowes brand at work and it does good for $150 or so.

You got the flat top griddle? How is it to clean after greasy things like burgers and bacon? I used my Camp Chef flat top griddle one time for bacon and vowed never to do it again. Way too much effort to clean after, especially when camping. They do kick ass making a ton of pancakes quickly or breakfast potatoes.

really easy, I got a cheap amazon griddle tool set and it has a scraper makes easy work of it. It has a drip pan with a hole in the back that grease can be pushed into. Then as it warms up I take a wet rag and wipe it down. I cook eggs, bacon, sausage, and potatoes. Not a fan of pancakes on it. So far cheese steaks have been our favorite on it. Smash burgers are pretty good too

For the longest time I had my camp chef 2 burner griddle inside of my 3 burner weber grill. That worked really well and no cleanup other than cleaning the grease trap all the time. Now I have my campchef stove outside with the griddle on it and a cover for the top. Thats also working really well and basically no cleanup. Also if you get an adjustable regulator you can also use the camp chef as a wok station to make delicious noodles or fried rice.

I think I might have to try the Blackstone grill. They're only $500 and I have a 20% off coupon for Dick's so $400 isn't too bad.

I have a large BGE and love it for smoking. I have the Joetisserie that I use in it for cooking on the rotisserie. I also have the BGE mini max for regular grilling during the week.

@NearJetties I have a George Forman for sale! I’ll hook you up!
