This is kind of a simple question - but what do people use to grease the bolt threads and metal/metal interface for parts where not otherwise indicated, so that they don't get stuck by corrosion? I'm specifically thinking of the alternator mounting to the engine block in a 100 series.

I don't own a 100 series but, I did work on a lot of mining and construction machinery. On bolts, shafts or anything that need to come apart again after a very rough life in harsh environments lots of anti-seize was used. The Cat dealership I worked at used mainly the copper stuff and it definitely worked.

I use either copper or nickel grease on all fasteners except where thread locker or another special method of tightening is specified. Not sure if I'd use it with head bolts (esp torque-to-yield type) though.

If you use stainless fasteners to replace rusted nuts/bolts/etc. it's essential as SS will gall if over-tightened and risk thread stripping/binding moreso that hi-tensile bolts (the usually grade 8.8 or 10.9 types).

When you use any sort of copper or nickel grease anti-sieze you need to take 20 to 30 percent off the specified torque.
