I just greased all six zerks, I put about 4-5 pumps into the slip yoke Zerk I believe, and maybe 1-2 into the u joints...the second I finished the first pump into the u joints Zerk grease was coming out, so I'm assuming it was still pretty full? I have about 22k on the FJ....and others have reported "bone dry" so I was a bit surprised. Greasing the slip yoke is guess work pretty much...no grease came out the shaft, so clearly I didn't over-grease, but you really have no clue how much is in there. The grease that was coming out of the u joints seemed pretty dirty..very dark and liquidly, however I'm not sure if it's safe to keep pumping until the NEW grease comes out...is it? I'm using Mobile1 which is this pink grease that's very easy to spot (which is why I'm using it).

Also, is there any other points we are supposed to grease up?

The 2 slip yokes and the 4 universals are all that need to be greased. Your smart not to put too much into the slip yokes. When greasing you are only adding make-up grease, replacing what has been lost, your not really changing out the grease so there's no reason to blow seals by pumping the heck out it, unless you have a bad seal and have water in it that you are trying to remove.

don't overgrease the slip joint but do pump grease into the u-joints until you see fresh grease.

Really? So I should keep pumping until I see pink grease? Odd, can't that bust the spider seals?

What kind of grease comes standard from the factory, and is it ok to use a different type of grease when performing this service.

Any NGL Type 2 is fine. The manual calls for two different types, but I think we all know damn well if you paid a shop or Toyota to do it they would NOT use two types, they would use whatever crap grease they have in their huge storage buckets...if they even grease it at all. Mobile1 (Pink NGL Type 2) is what I use and recommend. I use the pink because you want to be able to spot excess grease, or see if any grease is leaking out, and pink is pretty damn obvious :steer:

So I was able to find the slip yoke zerks, but I cannot find the universals. Maybe a stupid, question, but where are the universals located?

Before you all puke at me for asking the question :) , I am pretty new to working on my own cars so my experiences is mostly related to oil changes and stuff.

Thanks for your help!!!!

There are 4 universals (if you have a 4WD FJ). There is one at each end of each driveshaft. You might have to rotate the driveshaft to see the zerk. They are located in the spider so you have to get the right angle.

On the 100 series board there has been a lot of success using a moly-fortified Extreme Pressure grease in the slip yokes to eliminate what is described as driveline thunk/clunk. The use of a moly-fortified EP grease is definitely recommended by Toyota for the double cardan joint and I would not use a grease without it for that joint.

The driveshafts are designed to be greased until the old emulsified or contaminated grease is "purged" form the shafts.

Greases are made with oils and thickeners. Overtime the oils will separate from the thickeners. If you do not remove the old thickeners by purging they will eventually block the grease paths in the driveshaft preventing the flow of grease.

attached photo - Front drive shaft showing new Moly grease (shiny purple) pushing out old Amsoil 2000 series grease (red). If the old grease was contaminated or emulsified with water this flushing action would be more important. This is what you are after.
