I took possession of this '89 FJ62 approximately 2 months ago on 8/15

Here are a few pics from her arrival to me in ATL

Next was to gut out the interior and inspect for any rust (even though this was a “rustfree rig” bahahahaha) I could locate. Carpet was wet, headliner was wet, door panels wet… get it all out of here

My transmission was seemingly in rough shape. Shifting was very rough and would exceed 3500 rpm and then slam into and out of gears.

Did the Rodney flush, did the party trick, nothing helped. Was told I needed a transmission rebuild but before I spent 4k I wanted to change the kick down cable just to see what would happen after reading all the threads on here. One of the PO's had installed a non OEM kick-down cable and welded a piece onto the throttle cable bracket. So we cut of the fabbed part, installed the correct kick down cable, and the transmission shifted like butter. I say this so everyone can try this first - because I was told I needed to rebuild my transmission and instead spent 75$ and a few hours and my transmission is doing great.

My exhaust…eeek

Rusted to shreds, rattled me into submission, cats leaked so bad you could cook bacon on my floorboards so a new exhaust was installed from the manifold back, cats deleted, new O2 sensors, etc

Verrrrrry throaty and you gotta love that smell…

Next…my suspension

Yikes

Broken leafs
Missing bushings

Every bump I hit the bangs and booms and rattles were just embarrassing

Ordered an OME complete kit and spent a weekend swapping it all out

Ordered 4 runner wipers and accessories for my windshield so I removed the motor and linkage and cleaned out my cowl for good measure

I ordered a huracan tailgate mod so I finished that project. It was unnerving to cut out all that metal but…here goes

Of course I went ahead and removed the tailgate and light assembly and cleaned and degreased the inside really well before reassembling

A few more of that process

Deburring took me longer than any other part

I cleaned, degreased, cleaned again, primed, painted, then installed their liner and cover

When I had my interior out, I put sound deadening all over everything except the firewall (because I left my dash in) and roof and it was definitely worth the effort. Makes a huge difference in road noise and in stereo sound quality. I'll be doing the roof when I rip my headliner out this winter.

I would also peek down into the holes inside along the roof seal to see if there's any early rust forming on the inside.

Yes, sound deadening and that whole re-carpeting process thereafter will definitely be done. I have a rust spot on my "rust free rig" in the floor below the back seat that will be fixed in November when the rest of the body and paint is done so I have to wait until afterwards for the interior renovation(s)

Thanks for the reply and advice
