Hi guys

Just fulfilled my dream and purchased a nice '94 FZJ 80 here in LA, near mint cond, but wondering about the timing belt as previous owner had it since 77k and the rig is now close to 119k. He sez he never changed the belt. Time to care about it, in your opinion? Will anyway give it a major service soon.
Thanks for your help, bests

It is actually a chain as I have learned on here. By all acounts from searching here it appears that it doesn't need changing.

80 series cruisers have a timing chain not a time belt like most newer vehicles. So... the service interval on the timing chain is at overhaul..., hopefully 250 or 300k.

Concentrate on baselining fluids and the normal stuff for 120k service. Lots of info. here on other PM items at that mileage. Congrats on the new purchase.

91-92 80's have timing gears. 93+ 80's have a timing chain. You should get good service out of the chain. They will wear/stretch a little over time, but at 119K you should not have to service the chain yet.

Time to worry about replacing it would be at your next major service/overhaul. Hopefully you should be able to go at least another 100K before even worrying about that ...

Congratulations & thanks for making me no longer the newest 94 owner here!

Where In L.A. are you? I am in Westwood.

Wow, feels good to be welcomed this way! Sorry for the timing chain/belt mishmash and thanks for the advice. Noticed kinda shimmy in the steering wheel but otherwise this rig really looks and rides nicely. Has never gone in the rough, the chassis seems incredibly clean. Dying to give it try soon in the back country, once the rivers have dried. For the moment looks more like mudwave surfing this weekend!
BTW forgive my faulty English, as I'm a :censor: French! Will search previous threads for other service stuff. Cheers

Frenchie,
Welcome! :flipoff2:

Word of advice. Either stay completely out of Chat or don't make this announcement over there. You've been warned.

Welcome aboard :flipoff2:

Shimmy in the steering could be a number of things...need more info.

There's backcountry near Westwood? :D

Re

NorCalDoug: I'll let you know, just have to drive more. And yes, there's backcountry not so far from West Hollywood, not only backrooms:D.

Whats this mean?

I'm just guessing here, but in case you haven't noticed... unlike the Brits and Aussie's, the French aren't exactly at the top of the list in this part of the world. In tech, we're a little more professional and typically give a man the benefit of the doubt, whereas chat is a little more "clicky". If you're not a part of the "circle of friends", their kind of stand offish to anybody... let alone a frenchie :D.

It'd be like walking into a bar in Pittsburgh, and saying you're a Cowboys fan.

Fixed it for ya.

Wow. Nice of you. Not trying to mess, guys, just to bond a little. Will stay away from chat as advised, but quite pissed off anyway. Cheers. Grolar (US taxpayer:D)

Don't get me wrong Frenchie; there's nothing sacred in Chat. As we speak they are raking Mormon's over the coals, denegrating Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, cookies, pop corn, and a couple of other American institutions and one of today's top threads is the recrucification of Jesus along with all Christians.

You think they'll give you some slack if you say "Hey, I'm a Frenchie, everyone say Hi! ? ? ?

Try not to be.

Edumacate this redneck though. What kind of reception would I get if I went onto a primarily French board and said "Pardon my French here, cause I'm an American"?

It honestly makes no difference from me where you're from. If you've got an 80's related question and I know the answer, I'm going to try and help you out. I think you've read a little more into my response, than was really there or intended.

BTW, since this is not tech related, we may have to continue this conversation over in Chat... :D, if it makes you feel any better, they don't like rednecks over there either.

What have you gotten me into -B-? :flipoff2:

Dunno Rookie, but if you move this thread to Chat you're on your own. I won't go over there unless I'm drug kicking and screaming. They talk nasty and eat their young and those guys are much too witty and quick for me ( ... and that's not saracasm...)

Come on B -- chat's where it's at. Besides, it's been weeks since anyone's eaten their young...well, it's probably best to say that it's been weeks since anyone's reported any missing young :D

IMO, jumping into chat is like getting into a hot tub -- you should start one toe at a time, then up to the ankle...then to the knees...definitely pause and give serious thought before plunging anything "important" in... :D
