I am about to make a purchase of a new set of tires!

I will be using the tires mostly for getting to remote locations on rough/rocky/muddy/snowy roads in the desert and maybe in the Rockies...

Any recommendations for the duratrac vs the MT/R?

Also, I think I am going to go with the 305/70-16 on the stock wheels...any other recommendations?

Thanks

Both are great tires but the MTRs have had reports of weak sidewalls and them blowing out.

Am I confused, I thought the MT/Rs had a tough sidewall specifically?

Even though my off roading is mild compared to the conditions you described and the last time it snowed here was 30 years ago I am very satisfied with the Duratracs. Don't believe you can go wrong with them. :)

I have used MTRs for the last 10 years on several vehicles and loved them. Never had a flat. My terrain is sharp rocks and stumps here in Texas. I now have Duratracs on the LC only because you can't get MTRs in load range E in the 315/75. I like the Duratracs so far. Much quieter on the highway but the week sidewalls scare me a bit. We will see how they hold up.

Have duratracs on my 4runner. Close to 15k on them and not showing wear. I rotate every 5k. Also they are "snow" rated.

The ones you are comparing to may be as well...I am not sure.

Went through this same debate. I debated between these 2 for sometime. I ended up with MT/r 315/75r16. Not enough miles on them to tell yet.

Did you put those on OEM 16s? Any rubbing? The guy at the tire shop recommends that i do not go bigger than 305... What do you think?

Yep, stocker 16s. No rubbing.... ok maybe a little in the rear at full stuff. Not enough for any concern. Im on OME J lift with 2" MT coil spacers up front. YMMV

Goodyear says that the MT/R sidewalls are 33% stronger than their tires without Kevlar.
The MT/R is an off road tire that does reasonably well on the street.
The Duratrac is an AT tire that does reasonably well off road.
305s are an odd ball size and I'm not sure that GY makes both tires in that size.

I thought my duratracs say M & S ? Mud and snow. I was under the impression they where a mud tire. Oh well. I did kind of figure that out on my last run out.....They were not that good in the mud here in CT. They packed up and where very slick

I would check a little more re availability of the Goodyears.

I run MTR Kevlar in 315/75R16 D on the Blazer, and I like them. But every time I cut one (which seems to happen on a regular basis, after about 3 years in the heat in Phoenix...), it's been a hassle to get a replacement. The last one took 8 weeks to come in. I suppose I could blame 4WP, but they've been really good with their no-questions-asked warranty.

Hey Retro, do you have any pics? I want to see how the 315s look on the stock rims...as i mentioned the tire guy said he wouldnt do it because it would be pulling in the tire quite a bit...

Thanks

My 285/75/16 Duratracs have been amazing in all conditions - but have really shined on trips through from Denver to Vail - on and off the pavement and especially in the snow.

AND they get comments constantly. Go with the Duratracs IMO

I'm actually using 315/75/16 Duratracs right now and they have been great so far. It may just be the way that I wheel but I haven't damaged a single tire in the last 5k miles atleast that i've had them. As soon as I figure out some financial things regarding parts, I actually plan on using them as my winter wheeling/everyday tire and going with the mt/r kevlars for summer, lol.

In the process of rebuilding my PC so this the first quick pic of them on my friends truck (long story and he is on OME 2.5")

I've read availability in the past was a issue, but as of now it's 2-3days to have one to my shop. I ordered on Friday and 4 were here Tues am.

FWIW in the pic those are running around 17psi. They are the D range.
