So, I found a local 1996 FJ80 that has 160K on the clock and is a single owner. It looks to be in good shape and has factory lockers. I'm wondering - is $8900 a good price? The interior (aside from the wood trim fading) is excellent and mechanically it appears to be sound. kbb.com says that this is the correct price but I thought I would run it by you guys here and see what you thought.

BTW, I am new here, but I've lurked forever. I've bought parts for my wifes FJ100 90K mile service from Dan - so I'm practically an old-timer. :)

Anyways, I've read all the new buyer info and now I'm just hoping for a little pricing knowledge from you guys.

And actually - to share my misery here. I'm looking at a 1992 that is also local for $5600 that also appears to be in great shape. Decisions, decisions...

The question you have to ask youself is what is it worth to you?? Do you need or want the lockers, and if not, maybe the 92. Do you need or want the bigger engine?, then maybe the 96. Its all about what it is worth to you. We really can't say much from an outside view with out taking a look. I will tell you that lockers are great, but definately not necessary if you don't plan on using them! Its a tough decision, but either way, you are getting yourself into a great 80! Good luck!

I would check out the nada value of it as well (www.nadaguides.com). Might give you another negotiating point with another value. I think edmunds.com will give you estimated value as well. I have been told a couple times that everyone "really" goes on nada value, but I'm not sure if that's really the case or not. The price I paid for my truck was more spot on with kbb.com. Either way, it's worth it to check those 3 probably.

Me personally, I'd go for the 96. Just having a vehicle that is 4 years newer makes a big difference to me. Of course, it depends on what your intentions are with the truck as well. Good luck!

I need more of a daily driver, but I want it to be bullet-proof reliable. Which is why I'm looking at a Cruiser. But, I wouldn't mind doing a few mods to it in time and maybe passing it along to my son.

IRS4U - be patient... you will find what you're looking for. I looked for a LONG time before buying and I'm glad that I did. I still stick with going for the newest truck you can afford in the best condition.

People have bought off of ebay, myself included, but you want to buy one truck, have it be what you want 100%, and be happy with the purchase. Buyers remorse is a bitch. If you're not in a hurry, sit back and keep an eye on ebay, craigslist, local paper, whatever... when you find something you're interested in, post up if it's not local and see if a mud member will check it out for you. A first hand opinion goes a long way, and the folks on this board know their cruisers.

Pass! I would try to pay a little more for something that is way better, or pay less for something like that, but know you will need to put money into it. I have seen much better deals than that. Plus you are in an area that seems to have lower prices than where i live.

Pass- unless you know it needs nothing...ie receipts galore.

to start you are looking at 1k just for the basics getting pm'd. Add to that misc. unknowns and you can easily be 2k+ right off the bat without previous owners meticulous dealer svcd records. So for 11k im guessing you can find a lower mileage housewife driven-dealer serviced which will come to you as a much better point of departure.

7k seems more in line with the mileage with many unknowns. If you want it dead on reliable as you stated----i would do a search for all the possible 160k mileage pm needs-calculate and work your way back.....pretty quickly you will see that a few K more up front will yield lower miles-more up to date maintenance-and likely nicer condition vehicle for the same price. Bonuses would be finding one with the HG done which would eliminate a $1500 dinger hanging over your head.

irs4u i also posting the craiglist listing, i would jump on it myself if we did not have the house on the market and on a get out of debt plan. i continually watch the listings in the area and this on by far is the most promising, check it out and as about the hg, good luck, btw i live in donelson and we are in the process of moving to mt. juliet where i grew up

Well, I live in Lebanon now, and I'm looking into moving to Mt. Juliet. Anyways, the 96 is gone - so I suppose that makes things easy. I'm going to look into that 92 now. Stunning how fast these things go.

I watched ebay for prices. compare prices and pics of vehicle condidtion on there and you begin to get a good idea about whats a deal:) .

are you talking about the 92 in the paper that they want 5600 for? it s been in there for a while. We are looking in Willoughby Station

Yes, that 92 is also on Craigslist. Seems to be a nice truck. I'm going to look at it on Monday.

My land cruiser is 96 too... Without lockers... One owner (woman)... And I pay 10.000 with 140K...

I think that is a good price for a locked 80.

Here, in Florida is DIFFICULT find that model!... I have to buy ARB lockers now!...

the price seems a little high on the 92 unless it is immaculate, but you have to start neg. from somewhere, good luck

Thanks FZJ80_YV, Im glad to here at least you think its a good deal.
I did buy the truck and I live in FL up here in the Ocala Nat. Forest and agree cruisers in FL are expensive and good luck finding a locked 96/97 for less than 10-12K, I know because Ive been looking hard for a few months now and thats why I jumped on this deal when it popped up on here... By the way thanks alot sseaman for posting it because I hadnt been checking CL in Tn. I would of seen it on EBAY but it may have been to late who knows. Also thanks to another cool cruiserhead bj70alex who was able to check it out and get it to the dealer for an inspection before I even flew from Fl:cheers:

Just so everyone knows because Im sure someone will ask no its not perfect it needs a few things but overall it a great 1 owner vehicle that has been taken care of and IMHO it is atleast an 8.5 out of 10:)

For that money, I think you should be able to get something with closer to 120K miles, but what really matters is that it's been well maintained.

I agree totally and was originally set on finding a vehicle with no more than 120K with lockers. I had no luck finding such a deal for less than 12K+ even though others say they were paying as low as 7500 and up to 13K.

I was on a budget of $10K. So when this vehicle showed up I had to move quickly when I found it was a 1 owner never offroaded clean well maintained LOCKED LC with 161K in my price range I moved on it.

Also for me a big plus was the color dark blue with grey interior which I prefer to the tan though it is nice also. Its a great truck and I have no regrets for what I gave:cheers:
