Goes in gear but goes no ware

Did my daily mile run to the PO box today. When I went to leave put it in 1st started to go the a load
metallic clank & stopped. Motor runs fine put is in any gear on it goes no ware, clutch feels good.
? would you take apart the transmission or transfer case first? Assuming the clutch is fine. Have not done this in probably 30 years.

This sounds too simple but did you bump the transfer shifter into neutral?

Yea have hade that happen before and was the first thing I checked. You may both still be onto some thing the transfer shifter dose not feel like I sort of remember (almost never need it with an auto locker rear) it is hard to move. Thats where I'll look first when time permits Thanks
