I decided I’d toss some new bushings in the front of the Goat today

Of course it took 3x longer than I expected

Of course.

The passenger side went on pretty easily. Most of the bushings were hammered.

Then I found This.

I’ve got my welding friend lined up to burn this in properly tomorrow.

Also has anyone had luck painting over these gold shackles? Looks like grillz

Cadmium plating in't what it used to be. Give it a couple months.

and sand it a bit use a cleaner before painting your stuff ...I did it on hot zinc plated parts it works ... trust me
Porsche use similar stuff too.
Metal Clean & Etch

... forgotten.... before painting I used a thin layer special primer for the zinc plated parts.
Worked more then 25 years and it would have worked the next 45 years an my gone 43...pretty sure

Same one was loose on my 64. Few beads fixed it just like that fix

The frame traps mud so bad there. I’m just blessed this thing was in Arizona with the amount of stuff I continue to dig out of the frame.

Were the rivets still there and just loose?

@tornadoalleycruiser you were correct on the pin size of the rear shackles being the large bore like an FJ60, however the spring hole is smaller.

They are FJ55 bushings.

Drivers side ran so long without a bushing it wore a groove.

I sleeved it with some heavy rubber

Eventually may need to re-arch those springs. Look a little flat.

Yep. They are.

Measuring from the center of the hub to the under side of my fender it is 1” lower than my 1968 FJ40 with stock springs and I know they are flat.

That said, the ride improvement with the new FRONT bushings was a little better.

The ride after doing the rear bushings was night and day better.

Unreal how nice it is not to be riding on bare steel.

I just put some 235/85-16’s on my 40. It has new bushings and shocks as well but when I went from the bias 700-15 to the radials it was a light year move.

I’m going to see if they fit on The Goat and if so, I may be getting another set

The Goat is coming along nicely.
