I had a state safety inspection today and the mechanic (not some scammer, he's a guy that I trust a lot) said my steering box is leaking badly. He knows that I do all of my own work, so he doesn't stand to gain anything from this. Time to fix or replace...

I've read a bunch of posts that are swaying me away from a rebuild and although I like their marketing Redhead seems to have a hit or miss rap.

Who is the go to for steering boxes?

Does anyone offer a new box with the 105 shaft/arm upgrade?

If I want to go hydroboost at some point, is this the time to get additional ports installed?

And who sells the weld on frame reinforcement plates. I might as well beef that area up while I have the pump out.

You could always have your box rebuilt by redhead, and just buy the 105 sector shaft, read some talk recently about redhead quality? I had one rebuild for my dodge years ago and it was a nice unit and fast service. Redhead can also add ports for hydro and I believe they offer a heavy duty upgrade also? Not sure what that entails.

If I recall the HD upgrade is the 105 sector shaft upgrade.

Red head quoted me $556 + tax/shipping in April to just reseal mine. Think it's like $700 more for the upgrade. I opted to rebuild it myself with the updated sector shaft to fix the slop it's developed over the past 340k.

$1100 and probably $40 shipping for a brand new 105 one from IMPEX. Gonna take about a month to come in.
Or sourcing the 105 stuff through IMPEX; though the Japanese Yen has weakened even more since I bought mine in April. Was just under $300 with shipping.

A new OEM steering box will have the updated 105 sector shaft. You will need the new pitman arm, but that should last another 20 years.

Impex pricing makes buying a new one a no brainer. You’ll never be left wondering if a resealed box reusing old components feels as good as a fresh and genuine Toyota unit plus withstand test of tiempo.

I got a kit off of rockauto and tapped the box myself for hydro assist. It’s a little scary but super doable

@CharlieS - No one here on mud truly rebuilds their steering gear box. All I’ve ever seen done by mud members is a reseal procedure. Those little recirculating balls inside the steering box play a huge roll in the amount of slop it has and how smoothly it operates.

This is where RedHead comes in. They spec new recirculating balls for the correct size and whatever other hard parts are not within spec. I had mine rebuilt and tapped for hydro assist by redhead something like three years ago maybe four. I’ve had zero leaks and it’s smooth as butter. You also get a warranty.

Based on your thread activity, I assume you plan to keep your cruiser a long while so it only makes sense to go this route or buy brand new from Toyota because the steering gear box can make or break your driving enjoyment.
