If both are 12V you can give it a try.

Go for it.

I have installed the new timer. But it did not solve the problem. The relay keeps clicking.

I have added a movie of my problem:

What could be the problem?

Which relay makes the sound? The pre-heat or the after-glow?
EDIT: Stupid me, you've already answered that question. It's the pre-heat relay.

Back to posting #11:
You tested 22V on pin 6. Was this with the key in the "IGN" Position?
Pin 6 is the power to the box and from there power to activate the relay's.
If that Voltage drops with turning the key, you have to check the path from the battery, via the 15A fuse to the box (Black/Yellow wire) and figure out where the voltage drops.

Note: That same Black/Yellow wire is also the power for the EDIC system. Disconnect the EDIC relay to see if your problem changes.

I have measured 24.8 V at 4 positions while the key is in the "IGN" position:
- battery
- 15 A fuse
- pin 6
- black yellow wire at the EDIC relay

This was measured after glowing. During glowing the voltage drops about 1 V.

Disconnect the EDIC relay does not change my problem.

Did you have good voltage on pin 6 when the relay is rattling?

Rudi

Are those relays 4 wires or 3 wires and the housing is ground?
Exchange those two relays. Use #2 for #1 and see what happens.

Rudi

It took some time, but I have found the problem. A cable was connected wrong. Thanks everybody for your help, especially thanks to Rudi, who helped me a lot.

Wow.... Excellent job!

2 = not good
6 = good
8 = good
10 = is only 22V when key is in start position

Check your board for bad soldering points. I've marked 2 of them but probably there are more.
That "rusty look" is a protective coating which colored brownish over the years.

Here are some examples of bad/dry joints. Look for these.

Rudi:
thanks for the info re bad solder joints. Last week my 82 BJ42 suddnely had the clicking relay problem.
I resoldered two suspicious joints on the timer relay and voila ! starts right up.
PS I uses to work as a kayak guide on playa curu in the 1990s...awsome beaches and people
Pura Vida !
