A few days ago I started chopping the rear quarter panels. I went up the body crease and ran the line straight all the way. Trimmed the body mount support, will cap and weld separately before sealing up the rocker. So now I need ideas on the back. What can I do to make this higher? The frame seems to hang really low out back. Is there anyway to gain a bit more clearance here?

I've seen Kirk's badass build but it seems like most of the clearance gained is on the sides and not out back. I don't mind cutting and relocating the body mount, but it seems like the body crossmember and frame hang low no matter what you do. I also don't mind shaving an inch or two of the tailgate either. I'm picturing 2x6 planks under the rear quarters and under the tailgate. I'm just not sure how to get more ground clearance, or if it's even worth the effort.

This is where I'm at so far

Left vs right. Lots of room on the left, but you still have frame and body mount which hangs really low.

4x4 labs has nice rear bumpers

I've wondered before if you could lose the frame past the rear coil mounts, but keep the body past it though by creating a "high clearance" frame with smaller tube.

I've thought of that too. But there is the big body crossmember and body mount that attaches to the frame. Not sure what to do with all that if you chop the frame further in.

Just put some round tube up there high & tight then let that big fat piggy drag her big butt because she's got back.

I like how @bugsnbikes did his & I also like @Apounder s.

All it does is hold up the body with two mounts!

Leave the crossmember rearwards of the coil buckets and reinforce the panhard more... or dual triangulate and get rid of panhard... you know you want to! :grinpimp:

Ha! I'd love to, but then you need to relocate the gas tank. Which means it goes behind the axle which means I need the frame rails there. It's a downward spiral.

Fuel cell in the cargo bay. Throw a blanket over it when you drive in traffic.

That's what I'm wondering, if you could actually support though mounts without negating the purpose of the frame cut.

PKP80 has a really sweet build similar to what you describe

Break any windshields throwing rocks on Hwy yet?

I wonder how much of your 80 will be left when you decide to finally buy a mini truck.

Not much, because I can't see myself starting over on a new truck!

Well now we're talking! Seems like you should just copy all of this. Get to work! ;)

You are on a fast track to bobbing it.
You won't be the first...

i chopped BaconBits to here.... which alot higher up than rearward near the rear body mounts which sit beside frame.

Me thinks a bit of bobbing is in your future :) imho rear overhang is more of an issue than height even if you remove the frame as much as this. Seems like alot of work without solving the overhang issue.

the original shortbed lost 15" of rear overhang and had the lowest point of bed at oem height of cargo floor which on stock height OMEs was 43" with 35s.
