'76 2F 4spd - tranny/transfer removed, oil pan dropped and rear main cap removed. from all accounts, I should be able to pull out the rear main seal by hand and replace. Maybe I'm missing something, but the sucker won't come out - it looks like the flywheel attaches directly to the crankshaft - is that correct?

You gotta remove the flywheel. Just make sure you use locktite on the bolts when you reinstall it.
 
You gotta remove the clutch first. You probably figured that out by now though.
