Well fellas, I did it. Pulled the trigger on this beaut. 1995 FZJ 80. 260,000 miles young. She needs some work, but I got what I think was a phenomenal price. Couldn't pass it up. She's going to need a new power steering pump. Also, the PO decided to top off the brake fluid with power steering fluid so the brakes are a bit tight and dragging. Hoping I can pump the system completely dry and salvage the brake lines and any rubber fittings in the calipers. The calipers were installed back in March by Les Schwab. Thinking I can salvage them. Here are some pics.

Just saw Gerty in person... damn clean find for the price.

Looking forward to digging into the brakes.

Got some stuff done today. Ran to Budget and picked up a few odds and ends including a PS pump. Got back to the house and decided to tackle to brake issue. Decided to bleed the system and hope for the best. Pumped the old fluid out of the reservoir and added new clean brake fluid. Then I went all the way around and bled each caliper twice. Worked like a champ. Brakes are working the way they should. Now I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that the seals in the calipers don't start leaking. Tomorrow I plan on tackling the PS pump. Also installed the CDL switch.

Spoke too soon. Took Gerty out on an extended test drive. Brakes worked fine until about 10 minutes from home. They started dragging again. Going to flush them again tomorrow. Figure I'll do this a few times and if I keep getting the same results I'll break down and buy new calipers.

Nice fine!
A brake caliper rebuild kit from Toyota is $23 ( left and right sides/fronts ) or so, why not rebuild them instead of an exchange? Just a thought.
Are your plans to trail out the other one and daily this?

Nice find William. Is this 1 locked?

Sent from my hawn finga using IH8MUD

Nope. If it were locked it would be to good to be true.

Really haven't figured out what I want to do with this one yet. As far as the calipers go, I think a new, non OEM caliper, is just a bit more than a rebuild kit and it seemed easier to replace rather than rebuild.

Will,
I didn't realize calipers were that cheap.
What's nice about a project vehicle ( if this turns into one ) is the planning and pace/ideas that can be implemented. In other words, it gives you time to guess and re-guess ;) j/k, you'll have a purpose. Looking forward to your progress.

Don't think it's going to be a project, per say. Planning on keeping her stock or close to. Just want get everything running and in good order. I'm in it for pretty cheap and want to keep it that way. Don't want it to turn into a money pit.

Bled all of the calipers again. Also bled the LSPV and the master cylinder itself. Started trying to figure out the power steering issue. Found the reservoir to be bone dry. Topped it off with Dex3, I think the PO was using regular PS fluid, and started bleeding the system of any air bubbles. The pump seems to be working, but I still have some bubbling and frothing so I'm almost certain that its sucking in air somewhere. Trying to track down any leaks was impossible due to all of the oil all over the hoses. Cleaned them up as good as possible and will continue to look for leaks. Went on a test drive and everything seemed to hold up. Might bleed the brake system one more time tomorrow depending on what I find floating in the MC tomorrow.

If it would have been lockef I would have bought it since I was the first one to talk to the seller about it :)

Did a few small things to Gerty today. First, I checked the brake fluid. It would appear that I got all of the contaminant out of the brake fluid. Didn't see any PS fluid floating around in the reservoir. Hopefully it's taken care of.

I also changed gear oil in both differentials as well as the transfer case. Diffs both looked good. The gear oil was really dark and old but no water contamination or metal shavings. Trans case was the same, but there wasn't much oil at all in it. Probably not even half a quart. I'm hoping that it was just low and that I don't have a leak.

Also, taped up my intake air hose as the old tape was dry rotted and cracked through. Need a replacement whenever I can find one. Mike let me know that my hood was a little loose when closed so I adjusted the rubber stops accordingly. I hope to get Mike's nod of approval when he sees it next.

Got bored and the gold emblem was getting on my nerves. Time to bust out the rattle can.

Decided to get rid of the nasty, old, and cracked "wood" trim.

Didn't get much done today but did manage to get the rest of the wood trim off. Still need to clean the new surface up a bit but I think it looks a ton better.

Rolled 260K today. She's still running like a champ.

Replace the plugs, wires and distributor cap today. Check out how worn the spark plugs are. Just for a comparison, our spark plug gap is .0315. When I measure the gap on the one I took out, it was .070. Over twice the amount. I'd say it was well past time for a change.
