Anybody running 4.56 gears with 33' tires? non turbo 3B? just wondering if it's still streetable? or will it be too high of gear im runnig stock 3.70 now and it has a hard time getting out of it's own way!!!!! it's used as myDD thanx

How fast do you like to go? If you don't mind having a top speed of 50 - 55 mph go for it!!

Excellent question. I have stock 4:11's w/33's and have wondered what the 4:56's would be like. At 60mph i,m just idling down the road. Would really like to hear from someone whom has experienced this swap. Or at least a scientific opinion. Thanks

Hey guys,
I'm running 4.56 with 33/12.5 tires and I have to say it is nice. The engine does not work as hard to pull weight or go up hills (it's still only a 3B so don't expect miracles). I checked it against a regular car and at 100Km/h I am sitting about the same, so basically 33 tires with 4.56 you're back to about stock. Off roading is nicer, I was running 31s with stock 3.70 gears. The only thing is that you might loose a bit of speed on the straight (or downhill) areas, but you will make it up the hills a little bit faster. Most importantly the engine is under less stress, I noticed it is easier and faster to get up to 3400 RPM. Right now I can do 130Km/h, this is what the speedo says and is pretty darn close at 3100RPM in 5th.
Honestly for the cost, if you already have 4.11, it is only worth it if you are going to get larger tires. If you're still running 3.70, then if you have a choice between 4.11 and 4.56 - go with the latter.
IMO
All I can say is that I'm happy with them, but still look forward to getting a turbo:cheers:

I drove my HJ60 for maybe 2 years with 33" and 4.56 gears ( I have H55F tranny ) was awesome to me .. 5th gear and virtualy don't need to do more shift .. 120km/h top speed.

Has anyone put together the H41, 4.11 and 35's? I have two of the three, but am debating tire size... I drive a lot of highway when not offroad. When offroad, I do more expedition style wheeling to get back into the backcountry, not so much heavy crawling. I have the 2B engine and will most likely turbo it next summer...

Any suggestions?

I've been thinking about the same thing: h41, 4.11, 35's.
Right now, I'll probably stick to 3.73 and 33s (235/85r16=about 32.6) but...
next time maybe taller.

I'd think that the gearing whould be ok for your needs... but it won't be optimized on the freeway.

I drove my 2H with 33" and 3.70 - 4.11 - 4.56 let me be honest .. the better ones 4.56 you feel it with plenty of power .. and of course I'm not thinking in the diesel economy at this time.

In city driving .. 3rd it's enough ..

With 35" never try with 4.11 but 4.56 are just enough .. in my case. I'm not also a extreme rockcrawler .. but I feel ( sure after 4.56 and 33" ) I need more ..

In my HJ45 with the H engine, H41 tranny, 23% overdrive and 33" tires. Back around 1975 we pulled the 4.11's and put in 3.70's. It turned into a dog. On small hills we would be shifting out of O.D. all the time so we put the 4.11's back in.

Fantom-confirming it was 130kmH. I looked at my speedo and that equates to about 85mph. If so, what would the RPM's be at about 100kmh as that would about 60mph for mine. I'm thinkin i want to keep running 33" but i want slower offroad gear ratios and long, steep hills require some planning. A buudy of mine(GregS) has an 82 BJ42 w/4-speed, stocker tires, his pulls steep grade w/o downshifting. My 83 has the H55 and i can't pull hardly anything in 5th. Steep grades require pre-planning, downshift into 4th,and i can usually just crest the top without going into 3rd but i know the egt's might be up there. So i've always wondered if the 4:56's would allow mine to run/pull like his stocker.

Diesel42, for 100km/h in fifth I am sitting around 2300RPM (If I remember correctly). As for hills, well there are several factors involved, I have a 60 which weights more then the 40s, I also carry a lot of heavy gear in the back (for work) usually on hills I still plan ahead and at the first sign of loosing speed downshift to fourth. Also it depends on the hills. The 4.56 will help with this as you are putting less stress on the engine and are using the torque better. Which will probably mean that you won't get that much more speed but it will be easier to pull a load at the speeds you are doing. I did notice on hills that I can stay in the higher gears for longer then I did with 3.7 and 31" tires. Bottom line - 4.56 with 33s, in my opinion, is better then 4.11s. A friend of mine has a BJ40 with 4.11 and on the hills I pass him.
If you want serious increase in power/pulling get a turbo, I am planning to have one soon.
P.S. Lockers kick ass.

Fantom-the turbo is on my list. Do you think the turbo w/ the 4:11's would do what you and i are wanting or would the turbo and 4:56's be the hot ticket? Thanks alot.

Oh yea, i have an auburn rear locker. Just starting the tear down for the restoration.I'll be installing ARB's(front and rear) so if the 4:56's are what's needed then that will be the time to do it.

Diesel42, you lucky dog! Front and rear lockers, I'm working (slowly on getting a front and a turbo. The way I always looked at it is that it is a Landcruiser, I will never break any speed records - thank God, 'cause when I had an RX-7 I got 6 speeding tickets in 1 month. With 4.56 I have a good street and offroad mix, probably better offroad but like I said, in the street I can pass the same trucks with 4.11s up hill. I have not tried a turbo with 4.11s or 4.56 so i can't say which is better. If you get there before me let me know.
Happy modifying.

4.11 with 33" is the best combo .. with 35" involves no only the gears, also weight and SO of plenty of lift ..

I don't think changing the gears is going to help you much, especially if you want to drive up on the hi-way with it. I can tell you that typically the 3B (I have had them in 42, 70's, 75's) like a taller gear, they do better. I have a 87' BJ70 I run 3.70 stock gears and 35" and that is too tall of a gear for it, it is great up on the hi-way but puts a bit of a strain on it. I am not sure if there is a big difference with turbo or non turbo when it comes to the right gearing, especially if you have the H55F because is has a pretty low 1st gear.

Diesel engines are design for low RPM with lots of torque if you are used to Gassers wheeling, it is something you have to get used to to just let it crawl more, and believe me the 3B with H55F will do a great job crawling when you are wheeling.

For driving in the states, in southern California (because that is where I live and wheel) the best combination for the 3B with H55F in either 4x, or 7x is:

33" tires - stick with 3.70 gears if you want to drive on hi-way as well
35" tires - go with 4.11 gears if you want to drive on hi-way

I have tried 4.88 gears and it is too low for Hi-way and also bad combination for wheeling (oh that one had 35" tires on it).

I would say if you really feel like you need lower gear to wheel (al depends on what kind of wheeling and where) then do not go any lower than 4.56's if you are running 35" and no lower than 4.11's if you are running 33"

If you want on and off road and very capable on both stick with 3.70 with 33" or 4.11 with 35".

JMHO from all of the on-road and off-roading I do in southern CA, I should include Moab, AZ and the rest of CA.

Cheers,

Michael

I fully agree with Michael's post above.

The best way to find out how it would be is to work out the ratios yourself. Figure out what you have currently and do calculations (include current tire size vs stock!), then do calculations for what change you want to go to and see where each gear falls.

Sometimes you can see when 3rd gear with a new setup will feel like the old 4th gear, or whatever and guesstimate what a new setup will be like.

I'm going to 35s or 37s and figure on going to 4.56s. With no overdrive 4.88 will be too short and with a lower ratio my 3rd will be useful on (street) hills.
