Anybody running 4.56 gears with 33' tires? non turbo 3B? just wondering if it's still streetable? or will it be too high of gear im runnig stock 3.70 now and it has a hard time getting out of it's own way!!!!! it's used as myDD thanx
I don't think changing the gears is going to help you much, especially if you want to drive up on the hi-way with it. I can tell you that typically the 3B (I have had them in 42, 70's, 75's) like a taller gear, they do better. I have a 87' BJ70 I run 3.70 stock gears and 35" and that is too tall of a gear for it, it is great up on the hi-way but puts a bit of a strain on it. I am not sure if there is a big difference with turbo or non turbo when it comes to the right gearing, especially if you have the H55F because is has a pretty low 1st gear.
Diesel engines are design for low RPM with lots of torque if you are used to Gassers wheeling, it is something you have to get used to to just let it crawl more, and believe me the 3B with H55F will do a great job crawling when you are wheeling.
For driving in the states, in southern California (because that is where I live and wheel) the best combination for the 3B with H55F in either 4x, or 7x is:
33" tires - stick with 3.70 gears if you want to drive on hi-way as well
35" tires - go with 4.11 gears if you want to drive on hi-way
I have tried 4.88 gears and it is too low for Hi-way and also bad combination for wheeling (oh that one had 35" tires on it).
I would say if you really feel like you need lower gear to wheel (al depends on what kind of wheeling and where) then do not go any lower than 4.56's if you are running 35" and no lower than 4.11's if you are running 33"
If you want on and off road and very capable on both stick with 3.70 with 33" or 4.11 with 35".
JMHO from all of the on-road and off-roading I do in southern CA, I should include Moab, AZ and the rest of CA.
Cheers,
Michael
