well im moving up to 35's in my 40 and lockers front and rear, while im putting in the lockers i was wondering about gears, my 40 has 3.73's now, i have a friend with a set of 4.11(he went to 4.88's) i can get cheap. will 4.11 be enough with 35's or will 4.56's suit me better. it is my DD, what do you guys with 35's have?

I've got 4.11s and 35s and I think it's a good balance between trail and highway use. I would probably go with 4.56s with 37s but 4.11s are OK with 35s.

4.11s will be fine. 4.56s probably a little better. I am running 4.56s and 33s on my 60, its a good combo but I lost top end speed for sure. I think going to 35s will solve that :D

I would just go with 4.88s if you are going to regear, you are going to be running 38s in a year anyway.:)

4.56 and stock 4 speed transmission and 2f work for me w/ 35" tall tires. Although I am thinking of getting an Orion. I think 4.88 would be to much if you plan on going on the freeway much unless you have a 5 speed.

Are you going to the 3F-E? If so, the H42 is way lower than the auto. An average of something like 37%!!! I know there's a torque converter on the 62/80 that takes some of this ratios into the grey area, but 4.11s on my 3F-E'd FJ40 turn 35s with ease. It feels as though I have 4.88s in there.

There is a simple caculation to determine the correct or roundabout gear ratio.
Take the tire size you want to go to ex:35 divided by your ORIGINAL tire size in inches. If they are metric you need to measure them in inches. multiply by your original gear ratio.
Example 35 divide 28= 1.25x 3.7(original ratio)=4.65 new ratio

i have a fj62 with 4.11 and want to go with 35's. calculation = 5.13.

4.56's?
4.88's?

My personal opinion is that 4.88s are a very good match with the 3F-E and 35s against the auto. 5.29s are awesome but you will want to travel on the highway :)
