they're ok....it's not the end be all. ended up putting a direct drive back on till i rebuilt the solenoid on one of mine.
i was just getting them off amazon.

Bought a used one from classifieds to replace the crapping out original on my 78. I'm sold on the upgrade o_O

Am exploring and interested in the same, I am running a new one OEM that is still available, but is not gear reduction.

Is an FJ60 starter gear reduction that would be an option For a 79’?

Gear reduction starters are available in remanufactured from Toyota. I can't remember how much, but I know it was under $200.00
I'm pretty sure I just looked it up on Toyodiy or Toyota EPC for a newer fj60. Found the part number and googled it to find a picture just to verify it was the gear reduction style.( gear reduction is much smaller than the direct drive style ).
I have a gear reduction on mine and would never go back. Nice upgrade for sure.

Was just taking pictures to get the part number. Ya beat me to it Lol
Anyhoo. Here’s what it looks like

I use my GR starter on the Karma Cruiser occasionally to crawl off road where the 3 speed gears aren’t low enough to maintain momentum. A side benefit.
